Peter Thorn nailed the old VH brown sound with DMZ SD, run through a Marshall clone dimed out. But the truth is, nobody really knows what pup EVH was using. All we know is that until 1984 or just after, he was using Marshall Plexis dimed out. That is when he started w/Peavey. He claimed that his Marshall wasn't sounding the same. In fact, I read that he actually sent his Marshall heads to some amp guru in Europe to tweek. According to the amp tech, the amps sounded great and had the EVH tone, but as far as I know, EVH didn't use them anymore, or so we think, as he was endorsed by Peavey w/5150 amps.

Eddie didnt let the Marshall go until the sessions for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge..that album is almost all Soldano. The 5150 came out around the time the tour started.

I'll suggest a custom/59 hybrid with an A2 magnet just because I have one in my explorer and like the way it sounds period. I'm not trying to get Eddie's tone, but I think that setup is going to get you something you like.

Straight outta Chris' mouth, and he's said the same thing a few times through the years, so it's most likely true. The shark guitar just sounded worse and worse the more it was modded and Eddie wanted to start out from scratch and so borrowed Holmes' axe. Holmes was funny with his Destroyers, he would strap them to his back and ride around Cali on his Harley. He must have looked like some sort of Rock and Roll Viking.

Chris did however disclose that the action was way higher when he got the guitar back and the bridge had been moved... I assume he meant bridge pickup had been moved forward since Eddie liked to do that and was particular about it's placement on his guitars.

Yes, those Destroyers had Super 70's pickups that had alnico 8 magnets in them stock. The body wood was Japanese Sen which is sort of a cross between ash and alder.

Started with Peavey just after 1984? I didn't think that was the case-- I thought he started using Soldano in conjunction w/ his Marshall for 5150, and then finally went mostly Soldano by "For Unlawful", and started working with Peavey after that?

Eddie said he used a Les Paul for the rhythm tracks on "You Really Got Me". But so much bull**** about his gear has come out of his mouth over the years, who the hell knows. For a while in the 70s and 80s, it was di reguer to lie about your gear among guitarists (and Bassists). I remember a story one bassist told, forget who, that he boiled his stringsi n BBQ sauce......of course people started doing it.

And don't forget the affect of the phase 90 which was on "almost all the time" and the pre-amp in the echoplex, and the fact that line voltage was lower back then to......

Ultimately, who cares. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

MJ is a master winder at the duncan custom shop who has been with seymour for over 25 years and the exact spec
is a stock vintage gibson PAF(butyrate bobbins,roughcast magnet, plain enamel AWG42 wire,maple spacer,braided vintage hookup wire) rewound to the 78 wind 9.1K

Get a duncan 59 and put a A8 mag in it.
Very close sounding to the Super 70's pickup.
