VH1: Distortion or ‘59B

The routing in the body of this Epiphone Strat is unusual. The bridge position looks it would fit a Tele bridge pickup (or an angled humbucker). I guess maybe I was thinking it would have a swimming pool route

You are gonna use a pick guard. Don't worry about underneath. Use a chisel or whatever to get it right.

Yes the pickup is a factor but the biggest factor is Ed's signal chain. Also consider the VH1 sound is 70% EVH and 30% Ted Templeton. That said Ed's tones and setting are a blast to play with, I find myself using some in music applications far removed from the EVH or VanHalen sound.

early on, yes. but once he got to the musicman, i think he used the neck pup a lot more.

I read an article where Ed said Frankenstein was a single pickup because his wiring knowledge was limited, and he didn't know how to wire up the switch. Also the switch and neck pickup in Frankenstien was a Red Herring, they did nothing. He was tired of everyone stealing his design, so he threw those electronics in the guitar to throw people off.

I briefly had one of those with the batwing headstock. It was a cool guitar!

I still have one. (The S-210.) It's important to note, that the EPI Strat does not use a standard pickguard. If you want to change it, you have to go with one of those places that will make you a custom one.

Has been pretty much all said. I'd just add that it's actually production - as Securb said above - which has led people on various tone goose chases - on the first two albums, the same rig was used, but production decisions led them to sound notably different. Note also how different Eruption sounds on the record vs the room mic recording which surfaced not that long ago.

If I were chasing this, I'd also be more concerned about getting the amp right; pups have some perceived eq differences, and also play feel. Ed's amp was pretty much stock but had some factory oddities like a 50k middle control (as opposed to 25k standard for Marshalls of the time) and a few other things, some different resistor values on V1 I think. The increased mid pot supposedly gives a rounder tone with a tad more gain.

And not a single person fell for it

I do think it would be funny to have a Strat that looks exactly like Frankenstein, except only the neck pickup is wired in.
