VHT 50 12 Tube issue

I picked up a matched set of TAD 6L6s today and installed them in the Pitbull. (yes I made sure the switch was flipped from EL34 over to 6L6 before the install.) I turned the amp on and whala I had a nice sound. 45 seconds later the amp cracked and popped a bit and started fading in and out. I immediately turned it off and am now afraid to touch it given my amp/guitar issues of late. I am gonna put the 34s back in for now, but what would cause this to happen with a new set of matched 6L6s?

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

You didn't set the bias? Maybe you cooked the 6L6... or is the VHT fixed bias?

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

Yes it's plugged into a grounded wall jack.
Also from the users manual in regards to 6L6 and EL34 usage:

VHT Manual said:
13. EL34/6L6 Switch (Mounted on top of chassis) EL34: Sets the bias for operation with EL34 power tubes. 6L6: Sets bias for operation with 6L6 power tubes.

There again I threw the switch while the amp was off and unplugged the 34s and popped in the 6L6s.

Dude,

i just got a VHT 50/12 as well. The one speaker combo without the EQ. I thought it sounded better without the EQ.

My tech told me that even with the switch it is a good idea to get the amp biased. I put in TAD's as well ( EL34's) and we biased it. S.Fryette told me that to properly Bias the amp "The proper way to bias the amp is in Enhance/Class AB mode. In this setting normal bias range is 38 to 42mA."

Maybe you needed to rebias it after putting in the 6L6's as well. I have heard this amp with the 6L6's in it as well and it sounds great.
I picked this amp out of the Deliverance and the CL's sounded more traditional to me and pure.
What do you think?

i dont think that these VHT's are modern at all. to me their sound is more the Modded Marshall sound, very classic. Now Diezels those are modern sounding!

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

I was wondering that the Deliverance was a ingle channel amp and that Unearth are using the m (at least it's written on VHT site and they said it in a sevenstring interview)

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

personaly i didnt like the Deliverance second time i heard it. not for my tastes. Too modern sounding. weird thing is that its design is more classic ( no loop and one channel) but its sound is modern cause of the KT88's

weird
Should have made the amp with EL34's

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

I really dig this amp with the 6L6s. It sounds bigger, fatter and more round and punchy on the clean side. I really think the 34's are the tubes for getting the best sound on the gain channel IMO though. What can I say.... I guess I have come to the realization that I am a 6L6 guy for the most part.

Re: VHT 50 12 Tube issue

I think the Deliverance could be an amp for me maybe... looking around for a shop where i can play it....

btw how did you solve the problem?

I didn't. I called Christian and while we were talking he convinced me to try it again and it's been good since. I have a few preamp gremlins so I will be popping some preamp tubes in soon.
