Vibrolux help needed..

I´m about to buy a ´75 vibrolux (or at least I´m offered one). A non-mastervolume non-pull-boost model.

So now I´d like you guys to answer a few questions that came to mind.

I´ve played one before, and I remember the clean headroom being quite limited. But then again the tubes on that one might have been old and tired. So how´s the Vibrolux´s headroom with good tubes?

Do the 10" speakers really deliver? I really like the sound of 1x12" but as two 10" speakers are actually capable of pushing more air than a single 12" I´d like to know what´s the actual difference between 1x12 and 2x10?

Dude just so happens I am THE resident 1975 Vibrolux Reverb pimp!!! LOL!! I would be glad to give you my number if you want me to spill all my 1975 SF Lux tales.

...or get back to the subject and "spill all your 1975 SF Lux tales" so to speak.

Well, Vibrolux's are clean amps BUT they are only about 40 watts so they WILL break up...they are not clean like a Twin or a Showman but they are cleaner that a Deluxe or a Bandmaster. If you're looking for max clean headroom go for a Twin or maybe a Showman head and cab.

If you are unsure if it'll work for you the best thing to do is to try one and see how much clean headroom it will have and decide if thats enough for you. Are you looking for clean or overdriven tones?

As for 10's vs 12's...if you have 2 speakers that are more or less the same model except for one is a 10 and the other is a 12 the 10 will have a tad less bass and a tad more mids and will be tighter and "faster" over all...with the "right" 10's a 2x10 amp can be amazing!

I happen to really like 2x10 set ups a lot...I have a Tweed Super clone that is a 2x10 and B Bent has a 75 Vibrolux that he put 2 Weber 10F125's in and it kicks hard for a 2x10 set up.

Re: Vibrolux help needed..

As TGWIF said I have a 1975 Lux that I took from Silverface to Blackface specs. My journey through literally a dozen different amps stopped the day that TGWIF found mine for me at a local shop.

I can tell you this. A Twin and Super Reverb always has been way more that I needed, a Deluxe was never enough in terms of bass and clean headroom.

There are two things true of me. I Love an amp that kicks with plenty of bass (not boomy) and nice Fender Reverb. The Lux fits that bill for me. I can assure you that a good Lux in good working order with decent tubes and GREAT speakers is nice and clean and at least for me has plenty of headroom. I can have my Lux on 5 and have nice, clean headroom with Teles. At the same level I can dig on my guitar harder for a more edgy sound. From 5 up you start making the amp break up a bit more with little more volume increase. When I get my Les Paul I am sure it will crunch more on 5 than it does now.

TGWIF made the remark about a Lux being 40 watts and the fact that it WILL breakup. Don't let this scare you too bad especially if you are not familiar with Blackface or Silverface Fender breakup. I like to think of it as really loud clean with an edge if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong you can get really decent crunch out of a Lux on 7-10, but it is not in any way saturated. Pop a pedal in front of it and look out!!!

For blues I couldn't imagine a much better amp than a Lux. Here is a teaser to get your blood pumping a little........

Re: Vibrolux help needed..

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!

Yes, I´m aware thet 40 watts will break up at some point. But all my other amps are 40 watters also and I know it´s the perfect amount of power for my uses.

The reason I was asking is because all the amps, though same wattage, behave completely differently headroom-wise.

My ´64 bassman head has the perfect headroom, it gets really loud until it starts to break up and after that it´s not harsh in any way, the saturation just complements the beautiful clean tone.

My GT Soul-O 45 is completely different from that one, even with the gain full up it doesn´t break up, the tone just gets fatter and more harmonics appear. It´s the perfect clean amp, and takes pedals quite well also.

The Pro Reverb I have played a lot (not mine though, a ´73) has good headroom and nice crunch too but I find it a bit lacking in tone.. It´s ´hollow´ somehow, the mid-emphasis is too low for my tastes. And it´s pretty large amp to carry around also.

So judging from Your opinions the VR should fit my needs perfectly! The speakers are usually quite crap in mid-70´s fenders, but a nice pair of Webers will fix that if needed.

Thanks again!
