Vigier - shawn lane

Your thoughts on the Shawn lane master signature? I am considering trying my hand at making a flat fretboard electric. I also love the idea of the zero fret.

I would say try playing a few guitars with varying radii fretboards. Personally, 9.5 seems to be perfect for me. Going flatter just felt a tad odd to me.

Thing is tho man i couldn't care less. What ever the guitar is i will make it work for me ''after practice''. I think breaking through those barriers really makes you know the instrument and understand it for what it is.

My nylon acoustic is flat and its rad fun to play. especially when combined with the zero fret.

I've wanted to get my hands on a Vigier for so long...

They seem like the perfect guitar for me.

Re: Vigier - shawn lane

I had an Ultra Blues. It was an AMAZING guitar. I sold it because I'm more of a blueser than a rocker, it turns out. If I had to learn how to play without my thumb over the neck, and practice my sweeping, I'd get another one in a heartbeat. I don't think there are any faster necks out there except Musicman's, and this coming from a guy who doesn't quite believe that speed comes from necks...

If i had something like that i would never sell it. I couldn't even bring myself to sell my carvin haha

Allan Holdsworth uses really flat boards too. I love the zero fret idea ...especially if it is made of stainless steel. My headless guitars have them.

True i didn't know that. Have you played an electric with a flat fingerboard? I have limited experience with the zero fret but i understand the logic behind it and like you said if it was stainless it would be ideal.

Re: Vigier - shawn lane

With the zero radius and zero fret you could get the action stupidly low!

I'd also like a Vigier, though can't decide between the Indus, HSS Excalibur, and Expert. Heck, the 7 string Excalibur seems cool as hell.

Side note: on the Red Special, it was found during maintenance work about 10 years ago that the leading edge of the zero fret was set a few cents closer to the bridge from mathematically calculated zero, which helps with intonation. When they replaced it with a 'normal' fret, the guitar didn't play as in tune as it did originally, then they worked out why, and installed a new modified fret accordingly. I don't know if Vigier do this with theirs...

Yeah that sounds pretty good to me. Not so sure on the other models but that Shawn lane vigier has no truss rod? That dude in the video claims the neck wont bow EVER despite climate conditions or age. :arms:

Re: Vigier - shawn lane

I think the flat fingerboard idea works better if your hands are larger- it seems to work well for very fast legato playing, and unconventional chords. It is harder to play things like conventional bar chords, though. Chances are that Shawn Lane and Holdsworth rarely played anything conventional.

All Vigiers have no truss rod, instead it's a carbon fibre strip running down the middle. They call it the 10/90 system (10% c/f, 90% wood).

Yeah, it's something they've been doing for a long time - one of their signature elements as a company. Of course, you can't tweak the neck in the course of a setup :).

A limited ed. Lane model was released recently.

''NEW Hardened Zero Fret Technology -A zero fret has always been fitted on all of our instruments. This slightly higher fret’s role is to even open or fretted string notes, ensure perfect string height, minimize string friction and help avoid detuning, especially when using the tremolo. Now, thanks to new technology, we’ve been able to harden it so it lasts longer and make it removable so it’s easier to replace if needed.''
