Which one do you choose?

I own both in 2 different cabs. I don't own Greens but have played them at medium volumes - I know they are accused of mushing out when cranked.

Choose one and tell us why.

I choose V30s because they work for anything from Bluesy to clean to balls out rock and they are total rude when cranked, and very creamy and nasty. Best part is that they give you the best blend of classic and modern.

I chose those too, for that reason.

Other......Celestion g12-65, to me they sound like a high powered greenback..........

heard good things about g12h30, never tried them though...

second choice would be vin30s used w/ beamblockers

V30s=the suck, IMO

H30s or GBs by far...warm, woody...maybe not as tight but not nearly as piercing...

V30s are the JB of the speaker world..nasty high mid spike and no low end...not my thing..'cept in a mesa/6l6 amp.

All of the above- in my 4x12 there are Greenbacks, in my combo a G12h30/Vintage30 mix

Yep, but thry sound fab when driven by my Mesa 50:50 amd mixed with G12H30's. :)

I have a V30/12H30 combo in my open back Vox cab. It seems that at volume, each speaker fills in the holes in the other's tonal spectrum.

In my closed back Marshall C212 cab, I have a V30/12L combo. Talk about balls to the walls rock! The bass is huge and tight. The highs are sparkly, and the mids really cut.

:burnout:

The G12h30 sounds great in any kind of cabinet...open or sealed.

The Greenback is a classic but lacks bass in an open back cab and sounds best ina sealed cab.

The Vintage 30 sounds great in a sealed cabinet and very good in an open back cab.

I voted for the G12H30....sounds great in any cab and especially great in a Deluxe Reverb type combo amp.

V30's are my favorite, but I've been itching to try out some Greenbacks.

This seems to be the concensus.... by themselves in general I don't care for the V30s...but It make sense. I'd like to try it to see (err..hear) :bigthumb:

And I was drunk as hell when I posted that last night :smash: "the suck" was not very politically correct was it? :D

I loves me some GBs (and BBs)..but unfortunately I don't think they'd be tight enough for your usual style Jeff..perhpas in a mix tho?

Have you tried 75s? Or CL80s?

All this is a good info tho, as I've got a new amp (1x12 combo) that I'm prolly gonna wanna change the speaker in....I'd put a 12H or GB in and be done with it...But they are not power rated high enough :(

Re: Vintage 30 vs G12H30 v Greenbacks - which one?

I have V30s in both 4x12 cabs and I have G12H-30s in a closed back ported 2x12 and in my Gibson 15 watt combo. V30s sound the best in closed cabs and cranked. I like the G12H30s in open back combos because they remove that boxy too middy frequency range. We all hear sounds differently, so it's a matter of personal preference. I had a 1960A Marshall cab with G12T-75s and that sounded like rotten a$$. No midrange, brittle highs and lackluster bass. The differences are quite apparent when playing them side by side with the same amp and guitar.

That's what I was thinking... they might be kind of loose/honky for my style.

I've tried 75's, and while they're cool, they're more scooped and harsh sounding than V30's. Sound awesome mixed, but recorded they sound like crap, and I prefer the overall tone of V30's.

Haven't tried CL80's with a decent head, though. They always struck me as the budget Celestions for crappy amps to boast about having Celestions.

Not the 70/80s (which is the budget speaker you are referring to)..the Classic Lead 80. Entirely diff speaker.:bigthumb:

I hear people about the 75s...they are harsh in their own way too.

That's my exact experiance with G12T75's too. I can understand some people finding the V30 brittle, but the 75's are worse. They are a do everything speaker, that does everything sorta genericaly, and no one thing very well.

I'm soon going to greens and alnicos (or eqivilants) away from V30's in most of my cabs, though.

My vote goes for the G12H30......LOVE it mixed with either the V30 or GB:bigthumb:

How does it sound mixed with the GB? I was listening to the sound clips of the speakers on Celestion's site, and I really liked the sound of the Greenback and G12H30, but I don't know how well they'd sound mixed?

Re: Vintage 30 vs G12H30 v Greenbacks - which one?

with a GB/H30 mix, the H30 will be noticeably louder, being that it's sensitivity is 100db, vs the GB 97-98 db. I used to use this combination in my combo- because I liked to mic the GB, but needed the H30's loudness to hear myself on stage. Some of the GB's nuances may be lost by the louder H30, unless you plan on doing as I did.

Re: Vintage 30 vs G12H30 v Greenbacks - which one?

I am mixing 1 greenback / 1 v30/ 1 g12h30 heritage (55hz) and 1 texas heat at the moment. I am debating on throwing in my g12h30 anniversary to replace the texas. I have these in a Voodoo amps 4x12. My friends are all trying to buy it from me. LOL I wish the greenback didnt flub a little as we downtune to C. Other than that I love the combo. The texas may be pushing the bass over the edge as the heritage is a bass monster but sounds great for single line lead stuff as well as good for rythm.

Re: Vintage 30 vs G12H30 v Greenbacks - which one?

If I want in your face mids, V30, for something a bit smoother, more granular, a 25w Greenback.

I find it nearly impossible to choose a "favorite" speaker because each has its own application.

It kinda falls under the rule not "better", just "different".

That's the problem with the Greenback G12M-25, especially when used in an open back combo amp: the bass flubs out a little and it's not as tight and deep as the Vintage 30 and not as full and fat as the G12H30.. Four of them are nice in a Marshall cab though...very classic and crunchy. Maybe the crunchiest of the Celestions.
