heya, I'm looking for replacement pickups for an Indonesian-made Squier Jazzmaster with so far only the bridge upgraded to the mastery and some alternative wiring (more details about it later on)
The reason to replace the pickups at all is that the standard Duncan Designed one's by themself are relatively warm, which is not exactly what I am looking for.
The priority is the bridge pickup which is most likely going be changed for a humbucker while the neck is going to be a single coil.
So the bridge sound I am looking for is something bright (like very bright) when you play it clean, good bright crisp clean sound with a lot of treble is just as high priority as distorted sounds, and some solid punky/grungy sound when you get it distorted.
The humbucker should NOT get warmer and creamier when you crank up the gain. I'm also totally not a fan of darker 'typical-gibson-less-paul classic rock sound'
though I'm actually planning to put a fender tbx 250k-1meg double tone pot in the bridge to have an extra option for some darker, more nirvana-alike humbucker distortion sound (as a far as I can tell right now Nirvana distortion sound is fairly easy to get, the only things you'll need for that is a fender guitar with probably a 250k tone pot, a good humbucker in it and something like a ds1 distortion pedal, the only thing that will be missing in the equation in my situation would be the short-scale neck).
As for the neck pickup and the alternative wiring - the traditional jazzmaster lead/rythm circut no longer exists in my guitar. Instead, the little volume/tone switches on the top side of the guitar (which used to work for the rythm circut) only work for the neck, the other volume/tone now only work for the bridge pickup and the switch that used to jump between lead and rythm now brings the pickups out of phase. The whole idea behind this is A - to be able to experiment with kind of blending the 2 pickups together, B - getting a thinner 'telecaster-like' sound out of phase, just like the fender kurt cobain mustang does for the example (explained really good here https://youtu.be/lDMmxh19V4c?t=14m35s ) So, my expectation of the neck pickup would be probably a single coil that sounds thin and has a lot of treble output.
So again to summarise it - I'm looking for a very bright humbucker in the bridge with a lot of tone output when played clean and capable of some punky grungy distortion (though im not hunting the highest amounts of distortion there are out there) +some bright/thinny sounding single-coil (maybe a little bit warmer then the humbucker) with a lot of treble to fill it up and make it more versatile by playing around with the knobs.
I've been looking a lot into DiMarzio's lately and the pikcups that grab my attention so far are the 'Super 2', for being described as a very bright pickup. And the 'FRED' for keeping the clarity when getting distorted. The jazzmaster humbuckers at www.creamery-pickups.co.uk also seem promissing but I'm not sure which humbucker specs and magnets too choose. Maybe any seymor duncans which kid of sound like a combination of 'fred' and 'super 2'?
Would really appreciate any thoughts and ideas. This whole area is new to me and there's a lot of stuff I do not know about so excuse me if i'm missing out on something. This is also the first electric I'm making modifications on.
cheers
