Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

On my local craigslist there is an old yellow MXR stereo chorus for sale for $175. I am curious if they are worth the scratch or not. Has 3 knobs, and the ac power cord. Last vintage mxr I scored (envelope filter) is awesome... But I don't see much on the chorus out there.

Re: Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

I'm curious. I may at least go try it. I just know that some of the older stuff like that can be noisy and REALLY suck the high end away. My envelope filter sits in a bypass loop because of it... But that thing is ssssoooo sweet.

Re: Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

I had one. I loved it. Its a noisy chorus, but in a way I really liked. Mine broke:( I sent it to some a hole in Texas that's supposed to specialize in fixing these things. It blew a chip that is impossible to find. The @&$! Charged me labor fees to send it back, but now I'm ranting... The chip that blew is also in the mxr analog delay, which is worth more. Therefore, if that part gets fried, it's a goner. I'm keeping mine on a shelf for that one day when this chip goes back into production. I've read reviews that say the current version sounds pretty close. And yes, you will need a bypass loop.

Re: Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

Like a lot of old choruses they use a BBD chip that doesn't exist any more. Some believe that this chip is responsible for the warmer, more "musical" chorus you get from these kinds of units. Hence the high cost.

$175 is about right. That said, I quite like the current production MXR choruses (which still use an analog BBD chip, just not the same one) and the AC cord can be a pain depending how you have your board set up.

Cool. I was hoping you'd chime in tgwif. I can live with a little hiss, it's almost weird playing a dead quiet rig lol.

Re: Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

Yes - cool units are cool units. But old units may simply be that; old units.

I was around when these were new and they were meh (as were many MXR pedals). I put this on ein that category along with Distortion+ and some others.

That said - if it's the sound you dig, cool. Hit it.

But the fact that you are asking says you care more about what others think than the sound of the pedal. You have ears. USE THEM! Go listen to it and decide for yourself.

If Christian said the sweat off a horse's ball sack was tasty, would you try it just because he said it was cool?

On the issue of hiss - listen to the music, not the noise.

Interesting post...

This is a discussion forum, a place for guys to come together and ask questions and get the opinions of others...you do understand that concept right? You have an education and papers to prove it so I must assume you know how a lowly internet forum works and what it is for.

I also see no need to bring me into this, the OP said he was happy I posted, I assume he thinks I know something about it or for whatever reason he trusts my opinion...again, sort of the point of these things. Find folks who's opinions tend to be the same as yours and seek advise from them or discuss things with them.

As for your view on MXR stuff I STRONGLY disagree but that's the beauty of this stuff...if we were all the same and all liked the same stuff the world would be a pretty boring place, don't you think??

Interesting post...

It entirely sidesteps the business of the horse sweat - with or without relish.

I won't drop to the level of discussing horse ball sweat, it's just not a real issue when we are talking about cool old analog effects pedals...besides, he calls himself Aceman, he clearly has a taste for ****...

Re: Vintage MXR Stereo Chorus?

I only asked opinions on it... Of course I'd listen to it first!?!? Tgwif has ususally had good advice on stuff so I respect his advice and or opinion along with many others on this forum.

So far I've got an old MXR envelope filter that I dig A LOT, and I've messed with an old flanger and the old stuff from them impresses me. Plus, it's got an ac cord man! That adds tone and obviously is cooler than not having one! (Sarcasm)
