if i could remove every inlay from my guitars i would. maybe they would have been cheaper.

You might be right about that.

Seriously, though, you should take the inlays out and try to return them to the store for a partial refund.

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

Oh, there's many rock bands that are all about image. Their record companies care a lot about what people think, and 'advise' the bands accordingly as far as what to say, how to act, what to wear, etc. This is a corporate world baby, and they control their investments. Image is a HUGE concern in rock. I was listening to underground FM in the late 1960's, when bands could do whatever they wanted, and hippie DJ's could play whatever they wanted. Those were the days. It didn't take long for guys in suits to take over the industry and turn FM radio into a commercial-filled wasteland of corporate playlists. Most of the rebelious, anti-establishment bands need corporate approval for that; it's an image that sells. The classic 'bad boy' thing. They don't promote bands that don't cultivate the right images to appeal to fans. Unfortunately, rock and roll worries a lot about what people think. When you get big money involved, it corrupts anything.

One of my favorite quotes about popular music came from Scott Ian of Anthrax, maybe twenty years ago:

Scott Ian said:
"MTV sells every 13- and 14-year old kid a complete 'How to rebel' package. And it's a bunch of BULL[SPIT]!"

and they don't even do that anymore.

Personally I definitely want inlays - or stickers at least, on all my guitars. Without something for reference, total confusion would reign over my fretboard. ;)

+1. Especially on a dimly lit stage. If you're all over the fretboard, most of us are occasionally going to wind up on a different fret than where we thought we were.

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

I wasn't concerned about the lack of inlays, because I only use the dots on top of the neck, I was just thinking about making the guitar look awesome... I'm leaning towards no though.

So today I was paying attention to how I was playing.. and I look at the fretboard.

I do quite a bit, because I stand in front of a really big mirror when I'm playing at home, so I'm looking at the fretboard and my fingers and so on, but I could get by without the inlays...

When you watch big name players, you'll see them glance at the neck to verify their hand placement. Just about everybody does it. Those that don't, are usually playing something simple in basically the same spot.

I meant I was looking at the fretboard itself, not the edge. That's where my eyes seem drawn. Maybe it's the diamond inlays themselves doing it. Next time I get a bare fretboard I'll see what happens. :D

I would be pretty cautious playing a guitar on stage with no fret makers, and would be counting the minutes to the next break. My eyes aren't good enough to depend on side markers with stage lighting.

It's funny because I was actually looking for the same input, another inlay sticker thread was what brought me to this forum in the first place. I'm in the midst of paying off a trans red Ibanez ARZ800 on layaway and it has no inlays whatsoever. I was looking at some of the ones on www.inlaystickers.com and had wanted to see if there was anyone who's had prior experience with them but now that I'm reading that it's better to just leave the fretboard naked I'm sort of thinking twice.

I've used several sets that I got from Jocomo and they all seem to stay on ok. Except for ones that have pointy or thin ends, those peel up. but round Strat markers or Gibson block or trap markers work great. Anything that doesn't have thin, fine detailed points.

Also, I rarely ever notice that they are even there while I'm playing.

Right on GuitarDoc! The ones on my S Style beater are pulling up and discoloring, I have to use a Sharpie to re-color them. The one's on my Epi Spec. are round so they stay on.

I'll have to try the clear coat idea posted here, sounds like it will work. Lastly, blueman335 is right I don't know how some of you manage to play without peeking where you are on the fretboard. And yes, the force is not with you.

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

I've been trying to overcome the Force for years with no success.

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

Today is Sunday. I will pray for you to overcome the force and get your mojo working my little green friend.

Or as Mel Brooks stated, "May the farce be with you".

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

I've probably got too much "farce" already. But thanks for the prayer.

Re: Vinyl decal fret marker inlays; yay or nay?

I prefer inlays--saw a cool set on eBay for the planets with an infinity looking symbol as the meteor belt thingy (pardon my extremely technical verbiage)
