Viv Campbell sig LP..

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

What is it? A material that makes a damn fine fretboard.

As all mentioned - on a $5k guitar? Oh hell no....

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

Btw.... what the hell *is* 'RICHLITE'?????

Richlite is paper in epoxy cut in sheets. It works fine for a fingerboard, or shelving, or countertops. It doesn't work for me on a $5k guitar, though. They couldn't include ebony? Or go with something that is reclaimed wood with a story (beer barrels, shipwreck, etc). I think for $5k you should get real materials.

I have Richlite as a fingerboard on my black Les Paul I love it. It feels a lot like the USA Parker carbon fiber fingerboards. Very smooth and easy to control your bends. They play beautiful.

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

I get it, although 'carbon fiber' is a lot more hi-tech than Richlite. And Parkers, which I love, were like 1/2 the price of this LP and they fit a whole bunch of technology in those guitars.

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

I would never buy a retail guitar from Sweetwater, you'll pay 30% to 40% more.

Then your "Sales Engineer" is going to call you on the phone for the next 6 years soliciting more Business.

WTF? I've bought a lot of gear from Sweetwater, MF, eBay, TGP, Rig-Talk, my local guitar shop, local pawn shops, etc over the years. Sweetwater's prices are no higher than any other prices for new gear. Yes, my sales guy has called a few times, but he's far from a pest. Their trial period and return policies are great too. Next to my LGS, they're my prefered place to purchase from.

Some of the USA Parkers got up there in price. The street price for my MidiFly was around 4K. But if you liked those Parker fingerboards, there is a similar smoothness that I enjoy. And I agree the cost of that Lester is out of control for what it is. I could pop two Super Distortions in a Studio or 50's Tribute and be just as happy.

EDIT: I just saw the 50's Tributes are now $1,100.00 street price. What is Henry smoking? Weren't they around $800 - $900 last year?

Apparently, Gibson says it is now DONE with ebony.

And tries to pitch its richlite crapola as a more expensive PREMIUM feature... an UPGRADE

So typical nowadays; especially on the internet... bold-faced lying, i.e. "premium feature".

And not just that, but even more bold-faced lying by Gibson by claiming it's an "upgrade".

You know, it's up to us consumers ultimately to stop acting like crackwhores who need another fix with these companies...
when they have a captive audience, they'll pull anything.

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

I paid $3200 for a Gibson Custom Shop SG Custom.

I got an ebony fretboard.

(Of course, the guitar was made in 2008)

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

How do Richlite fretboards play, feel and sound compared to ebony?

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

I tried a lp with richlite before and thought it was ebony. Idk, i’m not completely against it and can imagine the “piece” of ebony on my ibanez rgew is likely paper thin. The binding hides that idea, though, i guess.

Also worth noting—- the rgew is NOT a $5000 guitar.

Honestly, the only way I could tell it wasn't ebony is the absence of 'grain'. Richlite is uniform. But at premium prices, I want premium materials.

As I said they play very smoothly great for string bending. As far as the feel goes it is like a super smooth ebony. No different in tone. Actually, I played the guitar out for the first time a few months back and got many compliments on the tone of the axe.

I hear that. If they want to market it as a premium material, i can understand why. Really, though, at $5000, there should be an option, rather than shoving it down people’s throats.

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

The most amazing feeling fingerboard Ive ever played was on the Washburn WM526 I had. It was the carbon epoxy stuff parker uses.. Like glass. I could commit Hari Kari for selling that guitar...

I think that consumers have spoken. They're not wild about robotuners or richlite. Henry thought he could paint turds gold and sell them as solid gold. They weren't near as successful as he thought they'd be. People who spend money on Las Paul's don't buy them for modern advances in technology. That was what sold Parkers and Steinbergers. They only had a captive audience because they tried to force them on stores. My LGS dropped Gibson because of these mobster practices. "Oh you want some LPs? Well you have to buy 12 with robotuners." My buddy was like "No one's going to buy these. Buh bye!!!

I would really suggest playing a guitar with a Richlite fretboards. Just because it is not as expensive as ebony doesn't mean it is not a premium matrial. It feels impressive to play; the boards are true and smooth. Maintenance down the road will be much easier if you need to do a refret, no shrinkage or splintering. Like Mincer said playing the guitar you really do not feel or hear a difference. The only thing I notice is very controllable and smooth bends all over the neck. I am really enjoying this guitar. I do not feel in anyway like they used subpar matirials in the construction.

Yeah, okay

But there's no such thing as expensive epoxy-soaked cardboard. This stuff is cheap.

There have been plenty of decent budget guitars before, and if they wanna sell a proper well-made budget product, then by all means... but don't go throwing together some penny materials with so-so hardware and a barely passable fretjob and stickering it $3 - 5k

Re: Viv Campbell sig LP..

No doubt Richlite feels and plays good.

But a premium product, 'tis not.

Like Adieu insinuates, it's criminal to upcharge for that... or even charge the same as they would for an ebony fretboard guitar.

If anything, they should charge less. But they don't.
