Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

I'm curious too - I've thought of that as a cheap alternative to an attenuator. :D

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

This is a dumb product, IMO. You're just putting an volume pot in the FX loop. This will have no effect on the output tubes...you're just attenuating the signal before it goes to the power section. It is basically the same thing as putting a volume pedal in your FX loop. If you somehow had a non-master volume amp with an FX loop it might be useful, but I doubt such a thing exists...

Well a laney VC30 and most marshall reissues have FX loops and are non master volume but it is easier to use the FX loop knob (backwards) as a master volume

I built one and put it in my old Hot Rod Deville 2x12 to try to control the volume. It just adds preamp gain.

Is it just a pot and maybe a cap or are there other components? Schematics?

Build one yourself.

http://diy.erikhansen.net/fxloopbox.htm

It is good for amps with touchy master volumes, such as Fender tube amps where zero is off and 1 is still too loud. The link above has a description and schematic.

I have noticed that my Marshall does sound better with it in the loop and the MV up higher when playing it at home but I don't use it in a band situation. The MV on the amp isn't that touchy.

Ah thanks ... I wanted to build on which is switchable and uing it as a boost.. or better a drop ;)

That's a perfect use for it. Just wire up a stomp switch in there and you're good to go.

Go to www.diyguitarist.com and look at the "Solo Pro" pedal there. It's got 2 volume presets. It's under the DIY Guitar FX section and then "A Sampling of Stompboxes I Have Built" link. It's about 3/4 the way down.

Thx... I'm still not sure how much Resistance for the pot is the best...
I think 1 MOhm so there is no proper load...
Yeah I started a thread about that ....

I already found the solo pro over google ...
banzai also have a kit (but with a tone bleeding cap so I think it's constructed for use in front of the amp)..

On top of this I think of building it remote with a relay...
a prototyp of my relay DPDT switch is already working :)

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

100K pot is fine. That's what I used. I found that 1M was too large. There was no change until the last 25% travel of the pot.

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

Thanks guys, I already figured that it was asking too much of a cheap product.

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

No problem. I laugh every time I see his auctions. It's sure not a power soak/attenuator which is what he's putting it across as. And it sure isn't made of quality components. The box and knob are from Radio Shack (I have the same things at home). My guess is the jacks and pot are too.

:laugh2: It just kills me.

I missed the Patent Pending part. :laugh2: Oh, that is priceless. :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Volume Box for FX Loop? Do they work?

I made mine for under $10. It works well in my HRD. But please don't kid yourself. It's by no means a attenuator!!. It's only function is to tame a touchy volume knob.;)
