Volume increase when useing modulation pedals with distortion

I recently added a couple of distortion pedals to my board (Pro-co Rat 2 and TC Electronics Rottweiler). I previously used my amp's footswitch to go between clean and dirty but wanted to add a bit more variation to my tone. However, when I use a modulation pedal (I have a Boss BF3 Flanger and EHX Slammi pitch shifter) with either of my distortion pedals switched on, I get a huge jump in volume. I don't mind a small volume bump but this is really extreme. Neither of my modulation pedals have a volume control. I don't want to turn my amp or guitar down as then I'd be too quiet when the pedals are switched off. Does anybody know how I can solve this problem? Would it help if I added a compression pedal or are there any mods that I could do to the Slammi and BF3? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't use Flanger or Pitch Shifters but think they are pretty cool. For your problem looks like others have had similar issues

What amp are you using? Besides the BF3, Slammi, Rat and Rottweiler, what other pedals are you using?

Crack 'em open, see if there's a trim pot...

Re: Volume increase when useing modulation pedals with distortion

Modulation like chorus and flange are timebased.
So they are delays set to short times.
The depth is the volume....
And there is the trouble, 'cause if you turn down the depth, the effect gets weaker.
If the problem is with overdrive or distortion, try to put the effects before dirt pedals.

Or get some of the pedal based parallel mixers out there, then you can turn up the depth, and get it mixed down with the mixers blend knob.
Some of the spatial effects needs volume though, or the effect will simply become too subtle and therfor useless!

A compressor after the modulation pedals would help you tame the volume increase, but I'm not sure that's a good thing for your overall tone. As jtougas mentioned, there may be an internal trim pot that adjusts volume, but most that I've seen affect the tone or character of the effect rather than the volume. Google is your friend.

Can you describe your signal chain? In what order are your pedals? Are you running any of them in the effects loop, or are they all up front?

That's because both your distortions are true-bypassed while at least the BOSS is buffered.... however, it shouldn't be a huge jump, just almost as much as a solo boost.

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone.

Boss TU2 > TC Electronics Rottweiler > Pro-Co Rat 2 > Boss BF3 > EHX Sammi > EHX Memory Man Deluxe > Laney LV300 Amp
