Volume pedal question

Always wondered: Are they like something that takes your maxed out guitar volume tone but makes it lower db, or are they more like turning your guitar's volume pot down so that the gain also goes down? In short I'd find a use for the second variant.

Re: Volume pedal question

It's literally a volume pot installed in a pedal and works like turning your guitar volume down. Even if a volume pedal were made with some technology other than a physical volume pot, it's before it hits the amp input and preamp so it will still function like turning your guitar volume down.

Re: Volume pedal question

This. I use an old D'Armond for my resonator. It doesn't change the tone but I wouldn't use it if I had a volume pot. on it,.

Re: Volume pedal question

Just curious on the subject of volume pedals, but does anyone know of any mods you can make to limit the travel of the pedal? I need to be able to have the full volume as normal, but limit the travel so that the volume drop only goes down by a set amount. I'm sure I can McGyver it, but someone may know of a neater solution.

Re: Volume pedal question

What the people here forget to mention so far is that it really depends on the placement. Yes, if you use it first in line/before the preamp/dirt pedals it will function much like your volume knob.

If you decide to use it in the effects loop/after dirt into a clean amp, it will work much less like a volume knob. If then you are getting power amp distortion it will still influence you drive sound, but much less pronouced than using it before the preamp. It then works very much like turning the master volume on the amp down.

I believe Ernie Ball makes a volume pedal with a minimum volume knob on the side. I'm not sure but I'd guess it's just another volume pot wired in parallel with the one that gets turned by the pedal. Depending on what kind of pedal you're using it might be a pretty easy mod.

Morley Volume Plus.....toe down for solo volume level, heel down and adjust the small knob for rhythm level (min.) volume. Just what you're looking. for.
