VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

I have my rig setup with my TC Elec GMajor so that I can get Solo Boosts thru the FX loop. Works REALLY well. You can make the volume jump right over a band.

I want an option for cutting thru when I am ONLY USING A PEDAL BOARD, NO rack gear. Is there a way to make the volume really shine thru when front ending an amp?

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

unless you're diming your amp, a SD pickup booster/tube screamer would do just fine

I'd prolly reccomend the TS just because it'll let you sculpt your solo tone a little better

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

How about either of your Fulltones, the OCD or FDII? Keep the volume high and gain low, just so they act as toneful volume.

EQ pedal in the FX loop. Unless the amp is running pretty clean, putting any sort of boost in front won't add volume.

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

I use a clean boost in my FX loop for this and it works great. Try to get the cleanest boost you can if you don't want to add gain. Sometimes, if I'm pretty loud, I'll get output tube distortion, but usally I just get the same tone but louder...sometimes WAY LOUDER...

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

There are tons of clean boosts and low gain ODs that you can use. Hell, I use a delay pedal with the output cranked and the repeats/delay all the way down.

if you run your amp clean, something like a pup booster is perfect. it doesnt color the tone but ups the signal the amp sees.
if you run your amp dirty, theres not much you can do on the front end that will get your volume up.

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

I tried a Boss Compressor I had lying around AFTER my distortion - hmmm not bad not great.

I also tried the OCD with the FD2 in comp cut mode after it - nice but it makes the tone WAY fat. I am wondering if the FAT BOOST or XOTIC RC BOOSTER would be a better choice. There is an Xotic on Craigs in LA.

Re: VOLUME / SOLO BOOST or VOLUME JUMP

I love the Boss GE-7 for front-ending my '77 JMP 2204. With the pre-amp and master volumes on the amp both at 6 I get my crunchy rhythm tone, then with the GE-7 slider about three-quarters of the way up I get a great gain boost for solos. I hear a slight volume increase too - though that could be just my perception of the gain increase. You can also use the GE-7 EQ sliders to boost the mids which helps your solo cut through. I've used the GE-7 in the FX loop of my 2553 Jubilee with great success too. It's a great pedal for boosting an already overdriven Marshall.
