Volume/tone pot sweep

Hi.

i have a usa strat(sss). It’s wired in vintage(50’s) style.

2 tone, 1 volume.

I replaced all the wiring, pickups, pots(all linear) and caps. I’m experienced in soldering and electronics but now i need some advice. Maybe not thinking clear anymore

I replaced all the pots with Linear pots.. those i like the best for sweep range. But now i am having trouble with the sweep.. it does nothing from 10 to 4/5 and from 4/5 to 0 there is a huge tone/volume jump. (Havent had this before!)

the tone caps are Mallory 150’s .047uf. Pots are linear 250k.

Only the volume pot to switch is wired differently(vintage way.. volume to output and tone)

if i wire it all in modern style nothing helps. So there must be something else going on.. there are no cold solder joints and everything is wired correctly.

any one that can help ?

It is most probably fine. Human hearing is not linear thus you don't hear the volume change as linear when using a linear pot for volume, even though it is. Try a log pot for volume, my guess is that it will be fine.

Thanks for the reply. What about the tone pots? Those are linear as well.. have the same effect

Well, try a log pot there too. It's really personal preference though. It's not a big investment, learn what you like and then decide on first hand experience. I use Seymour branded pots whenever I need to change, those are all log and sound fine to me.

I have everything in stock. Also original usa fender pots(cts?). I’ll replace them tomorrow to all LOG.

i’ll let you know how it turned out. Thnx for the advice.

Yes, log pots (often called audio taper), they make the sweep linear to our ears. Although I think of the volume pot on a guitar more as much a "gain" pot as volume, but log still works better.

I installed 3 CTS Log pots yesterday and it works great!

before i only used linear because that worked best but with this new configuration LOG works better
