VooDoo amps

Re: VooDoo amps

I've owned two voodoo modded JCM 800 2204's with Hex mods, and both kicked ass!! Trace makes great sounding stuff, and is a real cool guy too.

Re: VooDoo amps

i have a trace modded marshall that sounds fantastic. highly recommended

Re: VooDoo amps

While it's doubtful I will own a Voodoo......(since we do the same thing...modify/build amps...)...
I gotta say that Trace is by far the absolute most class act I have probably ever encountered in quite some time...
definitely worth checking into!!!!!!

Re: VooDoo amps

I own a 2 channel Dual rectifier and love it. Trace hooked it up with a ton of mods. He let me borrow a old PA modified to be a witchdoctor. It kicked ass but I was in love with my rectifier and broke after my car breaking down in Ithaca. Trace took me to the Kid Rock concert the next day, Got in free and backstage and they played my amp and are now dealing with Trace. Cool as hell and very knowledgable. Get it Voodoo modded ASAP. Check out their cords too as they are the best I have ever heard.

Re: VooDoo amps

I hope Im not hi-jacking this thread but What kind of mods did you get done to your dual Rec KLINKDETROIT?

2 words, Splawn Mod.

There is more than one worthy tweaker in the biz. There is always room for more names of folks that do good work. Voodoo, Dave Bray, Jeff S, Mark Cameron all do great things. Those Bray Plexis are among the best for hard rock I have ever heard. I personally like the tones more than the Splawn which is a bit mid nasal to my ears.

Jeff it is very cool to see you are not in a contest with these folks, it seems you recognise good work. It is nice to see.

Re: VooDoo amps

kevlar3000, yeah judging by your soundlcips (which I enjoyed) I can see why you wouldn't like the Splawn. Its a Hard Rock Brown Sound Gain Machine, not much in the way of the tones like I've heard you play.

Re: VooDoo amps

of all the mentioned modders...who is "the man" to talk to about turning a '72 marshall JMP into a fire breathing metal monster?

Re: VooDoo amps

I'm not sure about that model you have, but the modded Marshalls I've heard from Splawn are super bottom tight with great gain for metal. Scott Splawn is a good player and Metal fan so, he knows this sound. I found the Bray mod to be WAY to fuzzy for metal and too loose. I'm not familiar with Jeff Seals work but have heard good things about it. I do own a Splawn so am very comfortable recommending them to Metal players.

It is definately not like the Splawn is bad, I just dig a more open feel to an amp. Your playing sounds mighty fine to me. My head is just wrapped around early mid 70s tones a bit more these days.

Re: VooDoo amps

Right, I didn't want to say it in case thats NOT what you were going for, but I got that 70's vibe from your tone too. Very cool. I like it too depending on what gig I'm doing... right now I'm in a Metal phase... LOL.

well i'm a bit odd i guess...i don't like marshalls, never found one i did...i was given the '72 JMP 50w from my brother and while i'll never sell it i figure i can make it sound the way i want and use it for more than a dust collector...i just find marshalls to be lacking in low end (i'm more of a fan of mesa type low end) aso they tend to be a bit more mid range focused where i tend to play with semi scooped mids (at about 3 - 5 depending on song and guitar) and the gain on the JMP is pretty much none where i would need a bunch more. i'm looking at the voodoo site nd they are in upstate ny while i'm here on LI so shipping wouldn't be too bad. i ay send them an e-mail and see what they have to say.

oh and here is a similar amp to mine on ebay although mine is a '72 i think. gotta check again it may be a '79 i forget, i get it mixed up with the year of one of my guild guitars for some reason.

just checked mine is a '79 sorry...same as the ebay one.

Re: VooDoo amps

My guitarist has an amp exactly like that. He is friends with Bruce Egnater. His am p was modded by Bruce and it does sound kick ass but I like my Voodoo modded Rectifier better? The gain on the Voodoo mod is more articulate. The Egnater mod is a little fuzzier. I do think both amps sound great though? The Egnater modded Marshall sounds more like a stock Mesa than my Mesa does. I had Trace mod my Rectifier in a way as to get a totally original tone and not exactly like the standard mod.

Re: VooDoo amps

thanks klink, i just e-mailed trace with some questions and telling him about my amp etc. my goal for this is to get this little 50W marshall to have enough gain and low end "chunk" to make me never touch a mesa again and i am a huge huge mesa fan. i honestly hate the sound of a marshall, i never played one i liked and this one i won't sell due to sentimental reason so i figure i can have trace turn it into a fire breathing animal and get some use out of it. if he can get this jmp to have the crunch of a mesa along with the low end of it and cut a bit of the typical mid range focused marshall sound out i'd be happy...no i don't think he can make it into a mesa but i want it to be it's own mix of some mesa-ish features and some marshall-ish features to be its own metal beast!

Mike...I know you said later on thatr yours is a 79 but a 72 JMP is what I really want...I love the early 70's metal fron marshalls! I have talked to Trace a few times and I think he would be a great guy to do your mods. I am thinking about haveing something done by VooDoo soon!

Re: VooDoo amps

sorry to drag your thread into questions about my amp first off....but yeah i sent trace at voodoo an e-mail about my amp to see if he can save it from being the dust collector it is now and make it a crazy metal amp...we'll see soon enough. i figure since i won't for any reason sell the amp i might as well make it more useful to me and plus having it modded is cheaper than buying a new amp by far.

no sweat! Like I said I have talked to him a few times now, and I like what i am hearing! Have you listened to the sound clips on their websote? It's pretty impressive stuff!!! Let me know what he tells you, I would like to know. I have the chance to snatch up a 78 JMP just like yours but I don't really like the tone of those amps...if you get good news I might grab that one up and get the "Mike Mod" at VooDoo!
