Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

I use three different boards with different amps. At $400 THAT WOULD MAKE MY BOARDS....WELL UNAFFORDABLE. I use one spots. They work well and VS stands behind their products. I had one suddenly develop some "noise" I sent it back and they replaced it under warrantee even though it was out of warrantee by about 6 months...

It's made for people with multiple high end pedals that require more than 9v. For people that drop $200-$300 per pedal, getting one of these isn't all that extreme.

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

My board has a PP2+ and an ISO 5. I am using every outlet except the 18V on the ISO 5. This thing was made for people like me.

great idea with the ISO-5- I have a PP2+ on me pedaltrain and need a few more outputs.

CAE/ Dunlop also makes a similar product for a little cheaper

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

The MONDO has been in the works for sometime and it's such a great idea!!!

VL is really still THE company to look towards for power supplies IMHO.

The MONDO is overkill for me but if you have a bunch of analog effects as well as several high current draw digital units it's your best bet and kudos to VL for taking note of what folks are using these days in terms of gear.

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

I swear by Voodoo Lab power supplies, and think this is just what they needed to release. However, these glorified power strips are starting to cost big bucks! As my pedalboard outgrew the PPII, I started finding the old school solution - just using wallwarts for the biggest pedals, and hiding them under a shelf along with the PPII.

I'd hardly call a completely isolated power supply a glorified power strip...

I mean those solutions can work for a lot of players but to keep things clean in terms of power, safe in that they are isolated and extremely quite in terms of hum, buzz and possible ground loops a good power supply is a must.

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

I am still waiting for my (4) 400ma 9v, (2) 12v, (2) 15v, and (2) 18 volt isolated power supply. WHERE IS IT????? That would run all of my pedals and I would be a happy man! So instead, I use my Walmart power strip with 4 wall-warts, with two extensions from my 12 volt and 18 volt wall-warts, and my 9v One Spot,.... total cost... around $40 bucks. No noise...NADA!

If it works then why keep waiting for a power supply???

That said be careful of places with dirty power...weall warts and One Spots offer zero protection against dirty power, spikes, brown outs, etc...

I mean you can run a PC with no virus protection and it works just fine until the day something happens and it no longer works...

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

I'm all for this piece of vital gear. Once in awhile, I search for cheaper competitors. It usually ends up being cheap versions from China where I don't know if it's built like a Voodoo or just a fancy power strip.

I'm really surprised that all the pedal companies haven't put something out there that directly competes in price with Voodoo, such as T Rex....but that one's even more expensive! I wish MXR would make this exact same thing for $199. Or Boss, Rolls, Digitech etc.

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

I don't think the price of the Mondo is that bad. I mean, some of the pedals you guys have are worth big bucks regardless of what you paid, surely to have them running clean and more importantly, safe power is a must. Also, I thought MXR had just released a similar unit?

It's not really a cheap thing to make. The multi-tap transformer alone is probably around $20 per unit.

I think the reason we don't see cheap versions of it is because it's not possible to make it cheaply.

Re: Voodoo Lab Mondo Pedal Power Supply

It doesn't take much these days to tap out your older power supplies. I've finally used every output on my PP2+. I used up both high current 250mA outputs (in parallel for 500mA) to power the Boomerang III and I had to use two regular 100mA outputs (in parallel for 200mA) to power my Bogner XTC Blue. That leaves just 4 regular outputs and thankfully I only use 4 more regular effects. If I wanted to add one more pedal I'd be out of luck. It's really about time Voodoo Labs started paying attention to the power demands of modern day players. I will say this though, they do make an excellent product. I've never had any issues with mine and I've owned mine longer than just about every piece of gear I've ever owned.

I predict this one is going to sell really well, especially when you factor in that it's almost the same price as the PP2+ used to be:

And for the people b1tching about the Mondo, it's being sold for a street price of $300. It's not inexpensive, but it's more than fair given just how much juice it's handling.

I am with you there, dirty power is not my friend!!!!!!!! ..... and you are right, what I have works for me. I have it all mounted to a pedal board and no one sees the power strip or wall transformers connected to it.

Now, the power strip is surge protected but not of any quality, by far. If I really wanted to do it right, I would use a power conditioner and plug into that. Still the cost of some of these so called power modules is a little beyond by understanding. The technology is not that advanced and the parts are plentiful. We should be seeing a lot more inexpensive and good power supplies out there, but we are not. Give me a clue????

Tell me why you think they should be less money?

These high quality, isolated power supplies with voltage switching, toroidal transformes (which keep down weight and heat) cost a lot to build...

I'm not saying that everybody should have one or that all rigs need one or anything like that what I am saying is that I feel MUCH better about using a PPII+ on my board than I do a One Spot or a DC Brick or some other lower quality power supply and the cost of running 2 or 3 power strips and 10 wall warts is just as much money in the long run, takes up a lot more space, causes more noise in most cases and still isn't as safe as a nice power supply...at least for me with my rig.

That says it all! What ever works for you. I stated, no noise with my usage at this time. I expect high quality, isolation is not expensive and if you look in mouser catalog, the toroidal transformers can be had for great prices when purchased in bulk. I cannot speak on labor costs to build these units, however have you ever looked inside one...... not much labor to put those pieces together. Hey TGWIF, you and I see things differently.... MOST OF THE TIME on this forum. I do respect your knowledge and opinion so I do not mean to disagree with you on your opinion on this and I don't want to start a back and forth as often happens with us. I just think that a good quality power supply could be built for less money and this is only based on my very limited knowledge of electronics and heathkit builds from 30 years ago. I expect innovation, and I have see great stride in computer power supplies that 5 years ago would cost $200 can now be had for $49.95.
