Re: vote on an amp

Yeah, with the selection you have posted I'd go with the ValveKing head, it just has a good souns and the "texture" control is pretty cool.

Re: vote on an amp

OK, I think he's using the jackson mark morton dominion guitar with a set of SD '59's

Re: vote on an amp

ever consider a tube power amp to go with the pod? might be a fun experiment. carvin's got that sleek silver-faced tube power amp.

guess that doesn't help ya much, but for hi gain stuff, i dug the valveking combo i tried. the head is probably even better sounding with a good cab. i keep reading these silly reviews on harmony central and musician's friend that say "well if you want gain with the valveking, you're going to need a pedal." that's total BS. i mean are people using so much distortion now they can't even discern any notes or what? well, i wasn't planning to rant, but that's what happens.

my main tones are clean, jazz, country, classic rock out of the clean channel

and for dirt I mainly use it for eric johnson and andy timmons lead stuff.

if I want crunch or dirt im gonna use a pedal

Re: vote on an amp

Check out the Traynor YCV50 . . . it's all tube, pretty cheap, and sounded pretty good for the kind of playing you want to do . . .

Let your ears decide Chris! Given that the V3 gives me a headache just looking at it.

You already know which one I picked. ;) For those tones you mentioned out of the clean channel they're all definitely doable, but I'd use an overdrive pedal for more flavor and grit out of the clean channel for the country and classic rock. The clean channel remains VERY clean all the way up to max volume (with or without attenuator) and it reacts wonderfully to pedals.

For the tones you mentioned on the dirty channel, I got frighteningly close to the EJ lead tones using a Fulltone Ultimate Octave on the fuzz mode and carefully blending the amp overdrive and the pedal drive. As for Andy Timmons, just try to crank the volume and go for less overdrive, hit the strings hard and clean, and get kind of a hi-fi sound out of the pedal for a boost. The OCD is great for that.

Have you been to the Carvin store in Santa Ana and tried the V3 head yet? They sound incredible! Think of a Triple Rec with more tonal flexibility and a more defined, crisper sound. It's not as touch-recative as the Legacy but it's more geared towards a metal thing on the high gain channels so you want that tighter feel if you're doing that kind of thing. Even if you're not, it's still a killer amp! If I didn't have the Legacy I'd have one of these.

I've not tried the Valve Kings or the Windsor, though both are available at the local GC. I should give 'em a test run sometime.

Re: vote on an amp

Not knowing what music you play, i voted "other" . . .

. . . and by that, i voted for an Orange Tiny Terror !

(they are below $600.00 and probably wayyyy more gain than you will ever need !)

My 2cents !

I hear a lot about the TT.
I need to try it sometime... you can hardly find Orange amps here though...

Re: vote on an amp

Carvin. The peavey valvekings sound like a muffled mess with a pissy clean channel to me. I get better sounds out of a hybrid.
