Vox AC30CC

I've just discovered a video clip on one of my Guitar One CDs that has a dude from Vox demonstrating the many tones you can get from one of these babies. It sounded pretty sweet, but I wonder, being the metalhead I am, how much gain is it capable of? Can it crunch? And how are the cleans for Jazz type stuff?

Re: Vox AC30CC

It's a fairly vintage gain, so if you're a metalhead, you may be better off checking out something like a Peavey JSX or something. I'm into blues, rock, and classic metal, so if I play an amp like the Vox, I know it's the one to use for blues, roots rock, etc. I saw the Vox being demoed by Vox's rep at the LA Amp Show, and for the heavy tones, he was using Vox OD's like the Big Ben.
Still, for metal, it's too tame of an amp, and you'd be better off looking at channel switching highgain heads/cabs.

Re: Vox AC30CC

lol now I'm disappointed! The tone he was getting out of his strat with just the amp dialed in at what he called a "modern metal" tone sounded quite good... and this was with single coils.

Re: Vox AC30CC

Don't get me wrong, it's a great toned amp that's a good platform for pedals.
But, if you want high gain out of it, you'll need to feed the front end with a good OD pedal. And the cleans.....the Vox has that covered in spades.

My only point is you wouldn't see Zakk, Dime, or Maiden playing Vox heads, you'd see Kravitz, Mike Campbell, and Edge using them. You might be happier with a head made for gain.

Re: Vox AC30CC

I had one, took it apart, poked around a bit and boxed it up and sent it back to Musician's Enemy.

Inferior parts in my semi-professional opinion. But if you want an AC30 and only have 1G to spend, it's your amp.

Re: Vox AC30CC

Yes I suppose you're both right... I think I've read on this very forum that many people have had problems (even the pros!) with their AC30s. So I might be better looking for something different... I was mostly curious, and intrigued.

Re: Vox AC30CC

I have an AC30CC and I have had no problems with it whatsoever. It's a great amp that sounds absolutely amazing! I'm diggin it hardcore....only problem was cheap tolex, but I e-mailed Vox and they're gonna send me a new one, though I've been wondering if I want to risk getting a dud just for some tolex/grillcloth issues

The old AC30's had reliability problems... I think Brian May had close to 30 or so as backups (or was it 20... I'm not sure but it was something rediculous like that).

Re: Vox AC30CC

Yep, the old JMI era AC-30s sounded God-like (if I could only have one vintage amp, it would be that... no question about it), but they overheated often and as a result, broke down often on the road.

The new amp sounded really impressive, if they up the build quality, I think they'll have a winner.

Re: Vox AC30CC

i remeber someone told me these Vox AC30CC are assembles in china. They do look like quite nice amps though. I also read somewhere that your need to remove a chassi just to change tubes is this right?

Re: Vox AC30CC

The new voxes sound great, but wouldn't be my choice for metal. the new british bulldog overdrive they make is pretty awesome and very metal friendly, though.

My old AC30TB gets spooky hot...

Re: Vox AC30CC

i heard one of these VOX's at a local store and it sounded like it has The Who sound built in!!!! Nice amps for that WGFA tone..... The Tone controlls were not too flexible.... They hardly made any tone changes... a one trick pony but a very nice one trick pony!

WHOFAN

Just swap out the chassis.

Re: Vox AC30CC

well in order to get the new vox, I have to send them the old one back, and when they get it, they send me the new one...it's a pain

My band plays in a cold basement, and after I got the AC, we didn't have to use the radiator anymore
