VOX DA5 miniamp clip

JeffB

Let it B
Here's my new Vox DA5 mini amp. This was just sitting on my bed with my laptops speaker about 6" away from it. VERY low volume. Just noodling around.

First minute is the Bassman model.

Second minute is the PLexi model. UNfortunately I forgot to turn the tone control back down so it's a little thin/twangy.

3 minute is the 800 model..after the "lay it down" part I realized it was recording a bit dark, so I pushed the tone up a bit.

Guitar was my Gibson Faded Flying V with 500T/496R pups. Only effects were a little reverb or delay from the amp.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Hey Jeff, that sounds like a fun little amp. With Father's Day coming near I may have to make a few hints!

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Sounds really good Jeff.....Loved the AC/DC "Highway To Hell" and Nugent stuff most and that's right up my alley!....Great tone!

Everything you do sounds great though anyway Jeff.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Jeff, sounds pretty good!! you've heard clips of my tone, well kinda close to it...stupid podxt LOL...can it pull my style off? (mesa, not marshall).

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Thanks everyone..you're too kind :)

I'm sure it would sound much better with a real mic on it. I get a lotta noise from the laptops internal fan.

I'm pretty impressed. It *IS* a fun little amp. I had a blast in the store trying a bunch of diff guits with it. One of the sales guys walked in and he thought I had switched from the DA5 to this custom boutique head they sell from a local amp builder (and thats one kick@$$ amp) and I had just as much fun when I got her home and tried my own guits through it.

Mike. I hear yea...the POD voicings are spot on but they squash dynamics, even through the Atomic. It gets kind of maddening. And thats a big reason I wanted something a bit more..."real". This thing is much better than the Line6 Spyders and Flextones and the XTL/Atomic for that "real amp" sound. I haven't messed with the Rectifier model for more than about 15 seconds or so. But I always thought the recto was on one of the better models on the Vox VTs. I will try to get something recorded for you with the recto model tomorrow.

:cool2::cool3:

Thanks for sharing. Hearing all of those classic licks makes me wanna get out my geetar.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

That was a fun clip to listen to. You got those riffs and licks down tight.
I really like the Valvetronix amps because they get those tones dialed in at such a useable volume. I don't need to sit and practice with a volume monster.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Yeah dude that sounds pretty incredible! You got some really nice tones out of that little amp. Real nice!

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Thank You! :smokin:

I din' get a chance to record today, but I'll try and get the Mesa, soldano, TSL, and dumble models recorded ASAP :bigthumb: The soldano is wicked for high gain lead work..though a bit flubby for chording.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Damn, bro. That little amp sounds killer. Great tones from. Nice take on "Heaven's Trail". Sounds great. What size is the speaker in it? It sounds huge for a little amp like that.

Careful bendin' that neck. ;)

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

On the first clip you posted, there's a classic song that I can't remember. It goes:
E||--------------------------------------------------
B||--------------------------------------------------
G||222-----------------------------2----------------
D||222-----445------445--445--4---2----------------
A||000-----445------445--445--4---0----------------
E||---------223------223--223--2--------------------

So what is this? I know the "tab" is terrible, I just kinda made it up. The timing is all off, and it looks terrible. But the notes are right. So what is it?

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

That would be Highway to Hell by AC/DC :)

Note that only the root note of the chord changes .. thus its... 2-5-5, 3-5-5 on the EAD strings...slide from 2nd to 3rd fret on the low E... its not 2-4-4, 3-5-5

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

It sounds better played with an open stringed G chord. The actual intro and verse chords are A, D/F#, G. Chorus is A, D, G, D/F#.

E- X X
B- 3 3
G- 2 0
D- 0 0
A- X 2
E- 2 3

I'm a sloppy ho when it comes to playing..all seat o' the pants..hell, it's hard for me to remember the names of the strings... so I'd def go with Erik's advice :bigthumb:

You're not sloppy, bro. Listen to your latest clip again. ;)

I mean that I don't know all the tech mumbo jumbo. Know a handful of chord names, etc. All seat of the pants/by ear.

Gotcha. Same with me. I know the basic chords and where they are but when they get pretty fancy (like augmented and diminished), then I get lost a little. I forgot a lot of my theory I learned in high school.

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Posting as I listen...

Your style is perfect for that first tone.. very Sabbath-like.. very crunchy.
The soldano sound seems to have more bottom.. whoah nice chops too :D
The Dumble has a 70s kinda tone hear.. you could definitely get a Nugent sound with it.
Lots of compression and a little more fuzz on the next sample.
The 800 tone, which comes next, has more midrange.
I think I like the plexi tone a little more than the 800.
Perfect 1st riff for the vox tone!
Sounding a little bit Jimmy Page with the bassmand sound.
Hehe Secret Agent Man with the clean dumble :D

Thanks for the demo bro :)

Re: VOX DA5 miniamp clip

Theory? whats that ?:laugh2:

I think I am a sloppy player to a certain extent, and to be honest I used to hate it...I always wanted to be so precise and clean like Malmsteen or primetime Schenker, but I've come to grips with thats the way I play and actually am glad that I play that way nowadays....some of my fave players have that little bit of ragged slop going on, kinda on the verge of being out of control, but not quite past the line yet...Moore, Robbo, Smith, Hannon....they vibrato a little wild, overbend, lostsa pick and string noise....attack the strings....add some character/attitude to it I guess.
