VOX Wah-Wahs

Can you fellow forum brothers give me some information? I was told that Jimi Hendrix originally used a Vox Wah pedal. I love that sound. I was also told that wah was made by Thomas Organ Co. Did he use a Clyde McCoy model?
I see on e-bay a Clyde McCoy model made in Italy. I see one made in Chicago
model # 95-910511. That model is not a Clyde McCoy one.
I would like to buy a vintage one but which one would I want? I see some people buy them as collector items. I would want to use it if I bought one.
Does anyone have one they would like to sell that works mint?
Thanks in advance for any help and information.

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I have an original Thomas Organ Company Wah from the 60's. I use this and keep it on my board at home. In all honesty it was not a very good Wah until I sent it StratDeluxer97 for some mods. It is now one of the best Ways I have ever used. As far as Vox Wahs go. There is the 847 which I believe is the Wah that Jimi used(not 100% sure). These new 847's are not great, but they are a good Wah. If you can find one cheap send it to StratDeluxer for his mods and it will be great. The other Wah that Vox makes that I have ised and currently own is the Clyde McCoy. This is a very good Wah right out of the box. It has true bypass and it is pretty vocal sounding. I use this as my main gigging Wah.

Probably the best Wah you can buy today is the Fullertone Clyde Deluxe. In your post you mention Hendrix (Clapton and Hendrix pretty much nailed the Wah sound back in the 60's). This Wah just nails the Hendrix sound right out of the box. They are pricey, but if thats the sound you are after this is a great Wah for that. The other option is the Vox 847 modded by StratDeluxer. I have a 847 somewhere at home. I plan on sending to John as soon as I can find it!!!!!

Geoffrey Teese makes some great wahs as well. Pricey, like the Fulltone, but these will get you fantastic tone and offer lots of tweakability.

VOX 847 is the common man's Hendrix box -

The classic Vox wah Wah that has graced the stage of many guitar legends. Players like Hendrix to Stevie Ray brought some noteriety to this pedal but its that familiar mid-range bite and vowel like WOW WOW that really made it famous. Along with the Fuzz Face, this IS the sound of the late sixties. For the unconverted, the 847 has a wider sweep and a sweeter high-end than the traditional CryBaby. Its a very different voicing and if you are out shopping be sure to try a few different models. Wah is all about expression and youve got to find one that fits you like a glove. Aside from the fantastic sounds, the Vox wins the Wah Wah beauty contest with its slick chrome surface and classy embedded logo. Top it off with rock solid construction and comfortable pivot and have a piece of gear that wont leave you without an ounce of buyers remorse.

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I have the Vox V848 Clyde McCoy reissue. As Bludave says, it is a very good wah straight out of the box. It's a lot better than the standard Vox V847 or the CryBaby, but not as expensive as getting one modded or going boutique. Works great for me.

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I'd agree that if you don't go the vintage route, then the Teese Picture Wah or the Fulltone Clyde are the ones to consider.

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I have three wahs; 2 Vox 847's and a Crybaby, all 3 modded with the Vox's being my favorites. I've had a few stock reissue Crybaby wahs through the years, along with the 847's I still have, but really like the Vox sound best. One of my 847's was another addition to a long line of STRATDELUXER97's uncanny abilities to get jiggy with the pcb boards inside a lot of different pedals and turn 'em into monsters, including the 847. He did things to my Vox which made it able to give me a more pronounced, vintage wah sound but with the ability to adjust the gain and make it wail.
Definitely my best wah by far. I played other Vox, McCoy, and Teese wahs at a guitar shop that IMO didn't come close to the overall quality of tone and sweep that my Vox has.

I've heard the Robert Keeley modded vox wahs are great. The price reflects that though!
Not that I've actually had a chance to play one.

How do I get in touch with stratdeluxer97?

He has a thread about the Line6 Verbzilla going on in this room now. You can click on his user name and send him a PM. I'm not sure whether he's doing pedal mods currently. :dunno:

I'm having problems getting the kicka$$ inductors lately and haven't done many wahs lately....I always recommend the Fulltone Clydes or a Teese Wizard Wah..

I am also looking for a wah pedal to replace my Boss Wah that doesn't sound too good. When you say Teese and Fullertone stuff are pricey. is it a lot more than the Mc Coy from Vox (which I believe is around £110 if I remember right, and quite pricey in comparison with the 847).

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I have no experience with Vox wahs, but I LOVE my Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah. Infinitely tweakable. Very versatile.

Great bang/buck ratio.

Re: VOX Wah-Wahs

I've always thought Voxes sounded good, but unless I'm wrong, they aren't true bypass. In my experience, this dulls your tone a little, when off.......like it's damping your highs. I've had that problem with a Vox reissue and cheaper Dunlops.

I used to like my Budda Bud Wah a lot, and it's true bypass. Sometimes, I wish I didn't sell it, but I really don't need more than one wah, since my current Fulltone Clyde Deluxe does everything I need. The regular Fulltone Clyde is the Jimi sound. On the Deluxe, they give you two other frequency sweeps, one higher, 'Shaft', and one lower, 'Whacked.' Shaft is good for funk riffs on high strings, Jimi is good for general use, and Whacked sounds especially good on low string riffs......think Jerry Cantrell.
The Clyde Deluxe is around $260, but if it's the last wah pedal you buy, it's worth it. Try and find a used one. I think I got mine new/used for $225 shipped off Ebay.

Yeah, I think the Teese and Fulltone stuff is a good $100 more. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is between the US dollar and British pounds sterling. Check these manufacturers' websites for prices, or keep an eye out for them on eBay.
