VPAF lovers...

How do you suspect they'd sound in an alder bodied, maple/maple necked guitar? The descriptions I keep hearing of these pickups are superb, but I've noticed they've mostly been in mahogany set-neck axes.

Re: VPAF lovers...

I've used the VHPAF quite a bit in a mahogany guitar. I think it would be too bright in an alder body, but a lot depends on your amp, style, and individual guitar quirks. I think Walt has his VHPAF in a bright or bright-ish guitar (alder? swamp ash?) and loves it. So as always, YMMV.

Doesn't hurt to try it. You can always exchange it for something else. But it wouldn't be my first pick for an alder body, maple neck guitar. And probably 25.5" scale too, right?

Re: VPAF lovers...

Yep, fender scale. What about the Air Zone? It seems pretty bass and mid heavy.

Re: VPAF lovers...

output wise could the virtual hot paf be similar to a gibson 498?
would it crunch up as good or better...

Re: VPAF lovers...

Alder isn't a lot brighter than mahogony. Dimarzio only rates the VHPAF at 5 on their treble scale. What's the air zone rated at, on their number scale?

Those tone numbers can be a little funny. A pickup with the same or higher treble rating than another can still sound dark or bassy if it's bass is rated very strong. Does that make sense?

I've had the VHPAF and AZ in the same guitar, and they are very different. AZ= fat, thick (lots of bass), high end sizzle

VHPAF=same high end sizzle, but not fat or super thick. more like a "full" low end.

My 2¢

Do a search for Walt, Stratdeluxer, and someone else (maybe AmpliFire?) and the VHPAF. There have been many threads about this pup, with lots of people describing it in their own way. Should clarify things.

I've read those reviews, but like I said they are talking about the pickups in a mahogany set-neck, I was hoping people that have used it might be able to speculate how it might sound in the guitar I described based on their findings.

Not sure how they'll sound with alder, but they aren't too bright in my mahogany SG....I find them ballsy and not at all thin....Articulate and tight also. The VPAF Hot has extra mids, nice highs and strong lows...The neck pickup VPAF is the same but has less mids...

Re: VPAF lovers...

air zone in a les paul maybe better than a custom?
looking for fat tone but without that terrible treble response from the custom.

Re: VPAF lovers...

I'm more worried about how they'll react with the maple neck and fretboard than how they'll like alder. I may try an Air Zone first, it might help create a more balanced tone. And I might give my beloved PAF Pro a shot in the neck :D. BTW, I'll be playing classic rock, modern blues, and some fusion-ish stuff.

Re: VPAF lovers...

Also, FWIW, there are currently 250k pots in this guitar. In the event the VPAFs are a little bright, that might help. It also might darken them too much, chances are I'll need to move up to 500k pots.

You'll just have to try it and see what happens?

Re: VPAF lovers...

I don't really think it would be too bright. It seems pretty balanced to me. You should consider the V Hot PAF.

Re: VPAF lovers...

I have a VPAF in the bridge of my Burns 12 String: Alder body, Maple neck, RW fingerboard. The neck is a 4 bolt. In the Burns, to my ear, the VPAF sounds like a Pearly Gates with a tighter bass, smoother but still present mids (woody) and a nice, ample high end but not to the point of an ice pick.

If you play it lightly, it sounds like a REALLY nice, sweet single coil, if you open up, so does the VPAF.

Regardless of the guitar you put it in, if you are putting it in the bridge, get the "F" spaced version as the DiMarzio "F" polepiece spacing is identical to that of a Gibson "T" spacing.

Remember too, DiMarzio has a 30 day exchange policy.

I replaced my Air Norton/ Air Zone combo for the VVPaf/VHPaf combo in my wolfie special. I personally didn't find the VVPaf bright, now keep this in mind, that I RARELY play just my neck pickup clean on that guitar. In fact, I can't remember the last time I played that guitar clean at all. I love to ROCK and for what I do, this combo is killer, very artictulate under gain (meaning mild to med overdrive, not killer dirt). The Air Norton / Air Zone was too hot for my taste. The 3-D thing that these pups have is worth having just to explain what it is.

I know that this is a Duncan forum and that there are people here that detest Dimarzio for one reason or another, but Dimarzio really nailed this one! You have to try them out (30 day exchange ) and see for yourself what the buzz is about on these.

The guys that detest the Dimarzio products have to get over it...One of the cool things and what I Like about this forum,is the overall diversity!
