:beerchug: i am just totally ignorant about wahs -- could i get some pointers? what are the good ones, what mods are desireable - that kinda thing........ thanks!!!

Re: Wah you say?

I got a crybaby that i like original one. I hear the vox ones that like jimi hendrix used are prefered over it though.

Guess it depends if you play more classic rock or heavier to decide maybe

Re: Wah you say?

Different Wahs sound different. Most stores will have a few that you can try - that's the way to go. It is a great effect. You can use it as a Wah pedal or set it in a position that sounds good and it's a tone filter. I have a Budda Wah that sounds great!

Re: Wah you say?

Buy yourself a Fullerton Clyde and be done with it.... no mods of any kind necessary. Probably the best vintage sounding Wah out of the box you can buy. The run about $200 so they are on the pricey side. You can buy a Vox 847 and have some mods done to it to get very close to what the Clyde does for less. but IMO just buy the Cyde. Nother good choice is a Vox Clyde McCoy. This has true bypass and has a better voice than the 847 does, so you can get a good sound with this as well. The thing to do is go to a shop that has all of them and sit and play with them all at once..... see which one works best for you!

You might want to try looking at a dunlop 535Q wah. Very adjustable, great sounds, and it's true bypass.

Re: Wah you say?

We all have our own biases as to what sounds good. Truth is that what works for one may not work for another.

Pack up your amp and your axe and go to a shop and play every one they have there. Make your decision on your ears rather than others opinions. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Re: Wah you say?

Like Skarekrough said wahs are a very personal choice. I personally love wahs that sound very modern and that excell under high gain(i own a Crabyby from hell and a Morley Bad Horsie), and while i think those wahs have great tone a lot of other players prefer a more traditional sound. Go out and try to see what works for your style and playing.

Re: Wah you say?

I just bought a cheap Donlop Original Cry Baby model.... A local store has a huge summer sale every year and they normally have Dunlop wahs for $89 or so.... they had a whole crate of them for the sale when i was there 6 years ago or so..

My Wah i love but sometimes i wish it was a bit stronger of an effect... but it does want i want it to do..... mostly with the wah i just turn it on for solos once in a while and don't really rock it back and forth like Barry White tunes.... I use it more as a tone filter and boost

Well, it's more than that sometimes....

Sometimes the Wah just works in a fequency range that doesn't jibe with the amp. I had a CryBaby that was barely discernable with a certain amp I owned. I had a Morley that with a different amp did nothing but generate white noise.

A really good sounding Wah is one half the sound your going for and one half just sheer functionality with the amp and guitar that you're using.
