Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

I need a decent pair of headphones for my pod. I have these little ones that clip round the back of your head and they don't sound brilliant, and when i tried the POD with big chunky ones it was better. Just looking around, they all seem similar, Sony being a bit more expensive than others and some unknown brands from a shop that appears pretty serious (and are a tad cheaper). Are there any pitfalls to be aware of in the world of headphone buying? I feel silly posting this!

thanks

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

In my experience, you get what you pay for with headphones. I've had lots of bad luck with inexpensive, non-name brand phones, but good luck with the pricier Sony phones.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

i've got an awesome pair of senheiser ones i payed 40 quid for, sound absolutely awesome, really full bass response

cept i need a new lead for it (thank god it was detachable) coz it got yanked n busted

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

Ok the main options from the highstreet...

Sony £50
Phillips £40
some brand with the model name/code being HDxxx (x = some number) £30

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

I am using Sennheiser HD280 pros and think they are really great.

I have used numerous other brands in various studios and find these are the best. I also use them a little with my POD XT at night. I think they were around $100 at GC.

ok those £30 HD watevers were Sennheiser, that brand sound good, and the ones for sale were £30. sounds good.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

I use Sennheiser 500 series - very nice headphones

I'd also recommend looking at Beyerdynamic and AKG - they do some really nice ones too

A while ago, I was looking at headphones and the HD280 pros really do look the best for the cash. All in all, I second that :bigthumb:

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

I two sets of AKG's. One was $15 on sale at MF, the others were $40 and much better. I wish they had better frequency response/range though, I notice when using them with the Pod XT or Vox Tonelab the Bass end turns to mush.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

I use a pair of either Audio-Technica's or AKG's. I really like the AKG's since you can just unscrew the end of it and theres a mini right there instead of having to buy a mini attachment which is always a pain in the ass to use. I also find the AKG's much more closed off and sound from outside doesn't get in, but all companies that make headphones offer different ranges of how closed off the headphones are.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

Got a pair of phillips. Theyre great. Awesome step up from the lil in ear ones. Tad on the bassy side when compared with my amp but they are good.

Get the Sony MDR-V700DJ. They handle 3 watts of power with a 50mm driver. they sound great. and they have a frequency range of 5-30,000 Hz. Your ears will give out long before these reference headphones will.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

That last point from Mr HM is key...your ears will give out sooner

Remember with headphones you are putting a source of sound (and potential damage) very close to your ears. This can have quite an effect.

Buy as expensive as you can afford - get high quality, low distortion headphones. And don't turn them up too loud.

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

Oh sorry, too late! I already got the headphones. They werent expensive! Well i don't plan on playing them loud and they sound pretty good so im guessing my ears should be ok?

Re: Wait for it...HEADPHONES!!!

Yeah, I think in the end volume is much more key than cost overall - the main thing is remembering that you're putting a source of sound very close to your eardrums.

I bought as expensive as I could afford mainly because I spend a few hours a day with headphones on at work (work in front of a computer).
