Want to Build Amp

I have built a few pedals and would like to get into building amps. Im looking for an amp with a fender like clean tone in the 15-30 watt range.

Anybody have suggestions for an amp that fits this description that would be fit for a beginner?

Fender Princeton. Cool little circuit. Matchless Lightning is also great.

A Blackface Princeton may be a thing of beauty, but it's not a good project for a first amp build. It's not even a good second build!

A Lightning is also a really cool amp but it's not going to give you "fender like clean tone". Trinity Amps makes a great kit for it though.

Personally, I'd strongly recommend either a Tweed Deluxe or a Blackface Champ as a first project. Trinity also does a Tweed Deluxe kit. Lew's brother Bruce at Mission Amps has a fantastic reputation for kits of that amp: http://www.missionamps.com/5E3kit.shtml Both outfits provide great support. I don't know a source for a BF Champ kit with support anywhere near as good, but there are lots of online resources.

Here's something to think about: http://www.allenamps.com/hotfudge.php Dave Allen is great for support. The plain "Hot Fudge" looks like a no muss, no fuss "brown" Fender-style push-pull amp with minimal frills and 15 watts out of 2 6V6 power tubes. This kit is expensive, but everything is top notch - especially the transformers.

Hope this helps,

Chip

P.S. Read everything you can find about safety... five times! Working inside amps really can kill you.
