Wanted: Old Fender Experts

Hey, I"ve got a friend that just scored a 1976 super reverb cab. loaded w/ Oxford cer. speakers. Question#1, I notice that the mid 70's S.R. cab. has speakers that are offset a little bit. are these cab. close to being as good as the mid 60's blackface s.r. cabs? Question # 2 , Does any one know where he can get a completed blackfaced chassis w/ reverb. Either a clone or original? Are the 70's silverface cabs. the same size as the 60's blackface cabs.? Thanks,

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

Ok, here are the cold hard facts...

Fender cabs really took a nose dive in the 70's and that cab is no where near as solid and sounds no where as good as a BF era Fender cab. They have a non floating baffle board that is made out of MDF where the BF era cabs had a floating plywood baffle, also the cab itself is simply not as well made and used lesser quality wood than Fender had used in the past.

Fender switched the Super Revereb to that offset pattern in 1970 and ran it until 1981 when the Super Reverb was discontinued and the size of the cab DID change...BF era Super Reverb cabs measure 25.5 x 25.5 x 9.75 while the later cabs measure 24.5 x 25 x 10.

As to where to getr a working Super Reverb chassis...look all over the WWW, check Ebay, fortums and chat rooms...short of that contact a small builder and see what he can do for you...I know that Mike Clarke builds Fender amp clones, he doesn't offer a SUper Reverb but he might to a one off if you asked him to, also Marsh amps offeres several BF Fender amps, and SDG Vintage does too...in fact SDG Vintage offers a Super Reverb clone you'll just have to see if they will build and sell you just a chassis.

Good luck

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

Just to give you a few measurement issues as well to add to what TGWIF said...

Blackface Super cabinet sizes
:

24" x 24" x 10½" (61 x 61 x 26.7 cm)

Silverface sizes:

68-69: 25½" x 25½" x 9¾" (64.8 x 64.8 x 24.8 cm)
70-81: 24½" x 25" x 10" (62.2 x 63.5 x 25.4 cm)

I have a 1970 Super Reverb that I absolutely love to death, but it's not a blackface :) But having said that, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! Blackfaces are hard to come by and my 1970 does the job very very well.

Almost correct! LOL! The 50's Fenders use plywood but the blackface Fenders have particle board speaker boards...not plywood. Other than that, my friend Christian is right on the money. The 70's CBS era cabinets are crap...and the new ones are no better.

A buddy of mine lifted his Vibro King up by the handle the other day and the whole top broke loose. They are not fingerjoined in the corners like they were in the 50's and 60's.

BTW, you wouldn't happen to know of any nice women looking for an "old Fender expert" would ya??? LOL!

LEW!

Blackfaces had particle board baffles?! I didn't know that...thats wild!

So, does that mean that the only difference in the baffles in a BF and a SF (just the baffle) are the floating vs non floating???

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

From what I hear, Silvertone cabs are absolute poop.

Yep...I've owned several, they are made from pressed papper more or less. I bought a twin twelve combo once from a guy, it had been sitting in barn for years and when I wen to pick it up I grabed the handle and lifted straight up on it...the entire bottom half of the cab stayed in the dirt...it had just gotten and stayed wet too long and came apart. No one buys a Silvertone because they are solid amps...thats for sure!

As far as I know, THAT and the positioning of the speakers. The speakers are positioned a little differantly in 70's Super Reverbs compared to 60's Super Reverbs. Lew

huh...I never knew that. I was actually talking about just SF era Fender cabs in general, not just the Super Reverbs.

You ever have a BF Fender that you had a plywood baffle in??? any good for the tone???

Im asking because even though I know they suck I still have a 70's style cab around my Twin Reverb...as soon as I nail down some killer speakers Im gonna put that puppy in a nice cab...it's a shame that bruce did such a killer job on the chassis and I still have it sitting in a junk cab!

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

Lou, when I built Evan's EvanRude, I found out there are only a few chassis widths out there. If you give me a width measurement, I can let you know if there's anything I can do. Thanks.

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

Thanks everybody. we were able to get some valuable info and some badly needed humor on this thread. This forum rawks and is still the very best out there. Scott, if my friends cab. arrives by the time I see him again I'll measure the inside of his cab. where the chassis goes. I'll get a hold of you. Ya thinkin ya might want to do a blackface super reverb chassis?

I don't remember ever seeing a plywood baffle in a blackface or silverface Fender...but that doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere. Just that I don't remember ever seeing one. Lew

Re: Wanted: Old Fender Experts

When I was in a band in the mid-70s, the other guitarist played a Fender Black Face Super Reverb with a Les Paul. Unbelievable sound that I lusted after. I scraped all my money together and bought a 100W Fender Bandmaster (i think that's what it was called) with 2x12 cab. I didn't know what CBS meant. What a piece of crap ... the most disappointed I have ever been in a piece of equipment. I was devasted ... there was absolutley no comparison ... and we played side by side every week. Volume, tone, everything about it was disappointing. I moved to Ampeg (still not there) then Marshall (pretty cool) then the Mesa/Boogie (heaven for me).

But I'll never forget that disappointment. :eek13:

Half inch floating plywood baffle is generally considered best.
