What do you guys think I should try next if I am looking for great cleans which having a thick/warm/aggressive/smooth tone?:1::cool2:

Mesa Roadster, Egnater TOL 100, Egnater MOD 50, Splawn QuickRod, or wait for the new VHT SIG_X?

Thanks!:cool2:

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

i just build an 18watt TMB with a goosed preamp (sorta like a modded jcm800 with el84s and its exaclty what you described
you might want to by a tmb from ceriatone

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

Genz Benz El Diablo amps have great cleans, and a thick & aggresive, yet warm & smooth distorted tone.

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

i think the TOL amps have that tone. lots of thick gain but never harsh.

smooth and aggressive are kinda polar opposites in my book

True Jeremy....I guess what I like is thick and warm with a lot of gain that kind of has a low mid and low end growl....kind of like a throaty tone....not necessarily the aggressive tone you might hear from some amps with the biting upper mids.

Maybe I should go for the new VHT SIG X or the king in my mind, the Egnater MOD 50.

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

If thick and warm is what you are shooting for, i would personally go for the Mod 50. Bruce's voicing on the high gain modules is very smooth and between the e-rect, mhg or the eg 3/4, you can't go wrong. I haven't heard the TOL personally though i'm very curious!

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

the only egnator ive used beside his preamps is the TOL and its a great amp with lots of gain and a very thick, warm and smooth tone.

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

You can go to www.vhtusers.com to read threads on the new SIG:X amp. I really want to try that thing. I amy just hold out a bit longer and keep saving till I decide. Or, I can keep buying and selling.

If I went Egnater, I would probably go the TOL 100 if I found a used original or the MOD 50. I will also not rule out a used Bogner Ecstacy but that is a lot to pay for a bar band/club amp. Another thing is the MOD 50 and the new VHT are said to be amazing at lower volumes. We live in a condo so i hate always having to wait to get to rehearsal or a gig to turn up. Even the Mesa Roadster is said to do the same, but Mesas do not sound all that warm to me. Maybe the older Mark IVs but they also are a nightmare to tweak and they can be somewhat 80s sounding to me.

I wish Diezel or Framus made an amp I would like and could afford...at least with Diezel. They do not seem versatile however.

I am hoping this new VHT is warmer and softer than th edry sounding ULs, etc. Steve, the owner of VHT says this amp will be mush more touch sensitive, softer, more sag while retaining the VHT clarity.

Also, the thought of spending a ton of cash on the mod only to have to buy and sell modules till I find my thing could be frustrating. I will say however that the clips I hear of the MOD 50 blow my mind.

Also, there are some promising small amp builders out there like Splawn. I hear they improved the clean on those amps. Also, the new Cameron amps!

How about Wizard amps? If only Cornford made a two channel head.

+1 on El Diablo, but I would say Diablo's cleans arent great, they are good. And Laney AOR six knob version, here some of the discriptions you would find "JCM800 on steroids with much better cleans" and "Deep Purple Live in Japan tones." Gorgeous british EL34 classic crunch, loads of it, with an OD you would match any modern high gain amp unless you need more crunch then clarity. You would be able to hit most of 80s metal with out an OD if you crank it up. For clean I will just say my strat with tex-special in the neck through CS9 chorus into clean chanel get very close to that Raibow's "Catch the Rainbow" warmth ... can you get any wormer then that??? Oh, yeah get a JJ's ECC83s Gold Pin for your preamp it will make your crunc and cleans amazingly warm and complex. THe rant on my amp is over. Thank you.

So many great amps! Diezel Einstein?

Cameron? Elmwood? Egnater? Custom Audio? Never ending!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

warm mesa is an oxy moron

Mesa defined thick and warm (I think some people just don't know how to keep the Presence at noon or so). I would say try a Mark IV and the Roadster and see which flavor you like best. Both are great amps and both will do thick and warm with great cleans.

Re: Warm amps with thickness and aggression?

i doubt it man, i'd say a jumped tweed bassman defined thick & warm, then the jtm45 tweaked it for more thickness & warmth

or even a tweed deluxe dialed in right could have invented thick & warm

i mean maybe they're warm for the new cascading gain footswitchable lottachannel amps, but in the grand scheme of things they're not all that warm or thick.

IMO orange beats them by leaps & bounds as far as thick & warm
