Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

You know it, I had to roll the dice!!

I recently sold my 2004 Gibson LP Studio because there were a ton of things about Gibson that started to really get on my nerves. Let's just say their methods and care can be... shall we say flawed and stubbornly traditional at times??

Anyway, I decided to take this nice angled strat neck I've had from Warmoth for the past 6 months now and turn it into something better than the MIM strat it was on. Again the neck is unfinished Wenge with a Ziricote fretboard, 24 3/4" conversion with the 59 roundback profile. It was a real star on the MIM, that's fo sho! (You can hear it on the song "the Tease" if you follow the link in my sig)

I missed my LP shape, just not the whole Gibson part too much after I sold it. What to do? Order a LP built to my specs of course... from Warmoth simply because NOBODY else offers them as bolt-on's (even though it's a brilliant idea!).

So I ordered an unfinished hollow Black Korina LP and got to work. Here we are now at 80% completion and I couldn't be more excited!! (I'm waiting for my new humbucker choices to arrive which are, of course, both duncans as well as the Wenge volume and tone knobs).

HSH: 59 neck, STK-S4 middle, Alnico II pro bridge with coil splits (push-pull volume).

The finish? I wanted to make it look old and vintage. I had my eye on the vintage mahogany LP studio's gibby was making for a while until I played one and realized I would never spend money on one. I still think they looked great though so I used that as inspiration and got to work!!

I thought the Joe Strummer Tele was looking way too overly forced and manufactured as far as the whole relic/aged thing goes so I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to do this...but alas... I did and I couldn't be happier!! It's a translucent Olive green and the pics don't really show it but the grain does show through a ton on the back and if the top did have a grain... it'd show though. Sadly I kind of got a White Korina lookin piece of Black Korina on the top... so on with the non-oil based staining it was!! Several coats of satin poly seal it all in for me. Regardless I chose Korina for the tone, not the looks.

BTW, she sounds incredible through the STK-S4!! I can't wait to hear the buckers, especially that 59!! Oh glory, I might convert to christianity when I hear the godly hollow Korina/59 marriage!

I love my Warmoth J basses so I guess I shouldn't have expected this idea to flop, but I had some doubts... they were quickly put to rest!

looks cool! i'm not a fan of the finish myself. i'd go for something bright or natural with that black korina but your preference bro!. i've never liked how unarticulate mahog set neck guitars are

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

Yeah, yeah! Everybody does natural finishes on Korina, I've never been one to do anything the "norm" way either. I thought about it for days upon days, for acutally 6 weeks as the body was getting manufactured.

It came down to this:

If the top was looking amazing with flame or even some of the coveted orange striping that occasionally happens with Limba...then I'd be lame and do a natural oil finish on it...

If not? Well it was a toss up between red and green. Olive green won because the top looked pretty boring and black limba has an olive tint to it naturally anyway.

Right on though, I hear what you're saying, but like I said, only the back sported any kind of impressive grain so it really didn't matter to me at that point.

Now I'm in love with this thing exactly how it looks. It just feels vintage!

Yeah you could say set neck mahogany is a tad muddy haha! Bolt on-articulation is real nice especially with necks that nave some natural sustain and WARMTH! (I do not own a guitar or bass with a maple neck! Probably never will again unless I ever decided to get a tele...)

yeah. like i want to do a Mahog body maple/maple neck SG from warmoth with p90s. that'd be perfect. still have the majority of the SG sound but much more articulate

and i'm growing to the color...i didn't like it at all when i first saw it to be honest. however, it looks great to me now!

That would be a real nice combo!! More articulate than you probably think too but it would be nicely balanced by such a warm body.

Haha, it's that olive green! It grows on you like mold...

Maybe in a few months, I've spent too much on it already!! Haha.

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

1.) You need to take some pics of that thing against a much lighter background so the whole pic isn't so monochromatic.

2.) I can't decide whether I love this or hate it! It's just so wrong, but that might just make it right.. maybe... I'm glad you're happy with it!

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

1. I'll snap more pics when I install the 'buckers and the knobs in the next few days against a black or white background.

2. The thing is you hate to love it cuz it's just so bad like that.

1.) White, please (or outside in your yard with natural indirect lighting). A Black background would be even worse.

2.) Exactly.

:)

I love the colour, always wanted guitar with a flat olive finish. And that is the only guitar that looks good with gold hardwere I´v seen.. Still would have choosen something else, but it looks good!

What knobs are you putting on? I wote sg stlye..

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

I've always wondered what an LP would look like with a strat headstock. It's pretty cool. I eventually want to build a warmoth LP for something different, Mahogany body painted white, maple neck and fretboard with black block inlays...it would be best of both worlds between a fender and a gibson sound and look (in my opinion).

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

That guitar looks mena, dude.

What tremolo is that? I thought at first it was a Wilkinson but in the picture of the rear cavity it doesn't look like their trem block.

25-1/2" bolt neck on a single cutaway ..... is it an archtop? ..... should be a great sound.

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

I just hope your humbuckers have gold covers, or else that guitar is gonna be three shades too dark, IMO. It's a nice color, but I still feel like it needs highlights.

Re: Warmoth LP bolt-on?? Haha, I thought it might be sweet...

That is a nice looking deal. I have a natural satin finished Warmoth Limba/Korina LP with a Korina neck. Love the neck joint too. I have a pair of '59s in mine and it is really sweet. :approve: :cool2: :approve:
