warmoth (or other neck mfg) general questions

seems like there is alot of ppl here that build or utilize "part guitars". hopefully you can chime in with your experiences.

i've been looking into different necks for my fender guitars. i'm basically just discovering what fretboard radius is. i'm trying to get a more comfortable playing neck. i wanna do blues based music (lots of bending). i've been seriously eyeballing the fender tex mex (J vaughn) strat. it has the same neck as the eric clapton/buddy guy neck. i played a fender thinline tele and i really dug the "U" neck. so i'm looking into getting a thicker neck. i have a MIM tele that i believe the neck is too thin. i've been pouring over the warmoth site and it has great info.

what i want to know is, , ,

if a person orders a warmoth neck, is it pretty much "ready to go" out of the box? is there more too it than just screwing the 4 bolts down on the new neck and a setup? do i have to finish, or fret the neck?

i can setup a guitar and i can gut/rebuild it electronically, but i've never replaced a neck. i'm sure i can take a neck off, but i'm assuming thats pretty easy. putting a totally new neck on seems daunting to me.

what are the "pitfalls" to someone who does this for the first time???

the jimmie vaughn strat is around $700. great deal, but if i can blow about $200 for a neck, and get EXACTLY what i want, well, thats $500 savings. it seems all the fenders i look at are "almost perfect", but lack something i would want. i would love to order a body and a neck, but i think it would be better for me if i started simple/small with just a neck replace.

chime in!

Re: warmoth (or other neck mfg) general questions

Warmoth has a fat big warning that the necks as delivered require a setup including fret leveling/dressing.

Most people seem to be happy with them out of the box, though.

The question is: how do you pick between all those warmoth parameters?

Let's see, 8 neck shapes x 5 fretboard raddi x 10 fret wires x 4 play relevant finish variants== 2000 base variants. Then you get the wood choices on top.

Of course that's nothing that time, money and Ebay can't fix :)

Howdy,

FWIW, my Tele style neck from USACG needed some TLC. It's fine now.

the stuff i have bought from USACG has been awesome. Stuff from warmoth has been good, but needed more work out of the box if you want to be picky about stuff.

You obviously have to go into it with at least a general idea of what you want, but if you do, you can't go wrong. As I mentioned in another thread, I have three of them; I find the standard 10-16" compound radius extremely comfortable, and I always order a particular backshape, fretwire and nut width. They've yet to fail me...
