Warmoth vs. Fender

The only thing about building a guitar is that you can't play it first. You might get a magical, super resonant ax that really turns you on...or you might not.

You will get a pretty one tho...

Most of my Strats are Made in Japan 80's Fenders. All of them sound and play as good as my old '63 Strat...some are better.

None cost more than $300...

Lew,
I agree with you totally, of course ... I approached my custom projects with a lot of trepidation, and I think I'm pretty conservative with my choices, not straying too far from what's tried and true - maybe a little a little too much in that regard. :)
And I hear what you're saying .. whenever I pick up a new guitar, I knd of imagine closing my eyes to feel if it's got that "X Factor". It certainly doesn't always happen, and not even a majority of the time, but so far I've been lucky with my 3 finished projects.

After playing for 40+ years, and reading plenty of articles and books on luthiery, it was something I had to do. I would love to one day play an acoustic that I built as well.

The 3rd option is my "lazy man's" option...Search the used market for these custom made guitars, and benefit from the fact that they dunked over $1000 into it, but are practically giving it away at Am Std. type prices. Then, all the potential build problems are removed, and you're able to pick and choose ones that are finished. You can make any further mods from there.
Just a thought, for the guy who doesn't have all the tools
and workspace for these projects.
