King Midas to Cheap Guitars
... As in, they're starting to come as 1 5/8" thickness, the same thickness as a Fender Bullet.

Why not just raise the price $10 instead of making the body thinner? Can't put a full thickness block on a thinner body. :smack:

Along with the neck pocket being 2 1/4" wide, they're getting farther and farther away from being upgradable.

Glad I got mine a few years back before they changed to the current headstock.

Re: Warning - SX (Rondo) Guitars are getting thin...

I avoid these issues by only buying guitars that are already good when I buy them.

Re: Warning - SX (Rondo) Guitars are getting thin...

I know a lot of people rave about these guitars but I have never picked one up that didnt feel like a piece of crap to me.

And I have a couple Squires, and an old Vantage so the notion of gear snobbery doesnt work as a retort.

I know it's cliche, but with guitars you usually get what you pay for. I had an Agile for a few weeks, it just didn't do anything for me.

Man, I've always wanted to buy one of the SX Liquid's (really cool design, IMO) and upgrade the hell out of it. Second guessing that thought now...

Re: Warning - SX (Rondo) Guitars are getting thin...

I think it's a good thing...or at the very least, nothing to get upset about. I've always thought that the standard Fender thickness was a bit much. I like the thinner Fender style guitars. If I was a guitar builder, that's how I'd make 'em.

As for replacing parts, are you sure 1/8 inch will make a vibrato unusable? And if so, just take the block to a machine shop and have 1/8 inch taken off, and the string hole countersinks deepened if needed.

Musicmasters, Duo-Sonics, and Mustangs were thin. Also, Fender's first few prototypes, and the first few dozen Fender Esquires produced were a hair over 1-1/2 inches thick. And the new Rondo guitars are the same thickness as a G&L. I've never heard anyone complain about G&Ls being thin. They feel great – better than a Fender – IMO. So the idea obviously passed through Leo's mind. It isn't that off the wall IMO.

I wouldn't mind. Don't think I've ever seen a Rondo guitar but may have. I do like thinner bodies though because it seems to give sharper mids and treble, kind of like an SG.

And the business model begins to emerge.

Old thread. Most of the bodies are back to 1 3/4" thickness, and the prices have actually come down on a lot of models.
