Wax Potting For Seth Lover

Does anybody have any advice, tips,or general info on potting a Seth Lover. I installed it last week and it sounds great but it tends to be microphonic at gig volume. Also, what effect would potting have on the tone of the PU. I seem to remember something about the bobbins being made of butyrate which melts at a lower temp than other types of plastic used. Is this a job for an expert? I sure dont want to melt my new pickup!

Yes it's a job for an expert and you will lose some of the great "honk" that pickup has. I got that info straight from Evan and MJ. MJ actually showed me what can happen if you don't pot it right.. not pretty.. it melts.
You can send it to MJ in at the Custom Shop if you really want to pot it.

Do you use gain pedals?

I have a COnair parrafin spa that I picked up for $5 on Ebay. It's one of those things women use to treat their hands and feet with parrafin wax, but it works very well as a pickup potter. Do not try this on a stove unless you know what you're doing, as you can start a fire quite easily. The Conair machine is temperature controlled, and as long as you're careful, you don't need to worry about melting the pickup.

Wax potting pickups is pretty easy. There's a few key things to keep in mind but all in all I wouldn't classify it anything above an intermediate level of difficulty. Hell, I did it a few months ago and had great results.

Everything you need to know about wax-potting can be found here:

Like I said, I did it a few months ago and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. The only variation from the Guitar Nuts website was that I used large muffin/small bread loaf tins with holes drilled on the lip of each side and a wire hanger for suspension over a standard cooking pot for my double boiler. It allowed me to use a smaller amount of wax and not have to buy a large pot.

Total cost of project came to under ten bucks including the wax.

If I were you I'd try removing the cover, and trying high volumes without the cover. If the sqling is gone, you'd know what to blame. Covers might do this you know.

And Stevo made a great post. I'd stay away from potting that pickup unless it's the only way out.
