Wax potting

Re: Wax potting

I've been using a small crockpot for about 10 years filled with beeswax and paraffin - works fine. A double boiler will work, but you have to be careful not to spill any wax on the burner (fire).

I saw a YouTube where a guy suggested 20% beeswax/80% paraffin....do you get that exact or do you have a different method?

Re: Wax potting

Through the decades I have found that beeswax is softer, and paraffin is plenty hard - but tougher to melt. That's why a mix works best.

Re: Wax potting

I use 100% beeswax because that’s the brick o wax I bought 15 years ago lol...I’m not sure how much is in there, anymore, but I vaguely remember having made a pretty big mess. Sorry I can’t remember.

Beeswax has never given me any problems but then, it might if you play outdoor gigs on the equator.

Re: Wax potting

I've never done potting myself, but I remember thinking how lo-fi the process was when I went to Seymour Duncan HQ.

It really is, and simple. I don’t know why people are so apprehensive about damage. Pay attention, keep it 140-150F, wait 10-15min until the bubbles stop, and you’re good.

*there are certain pickups that are exceptions, like original 70s-80s Bill Lawrence.

Re: Wax potting

After watching a bunch of how to videos, I’m confident that I can do it.
It’s much easier than I thought. It really is a simple process.
For about $20 in supplies, I should be good to go.

Just make SURE you get a meat thermometer. My first pickup, I fully melted the bobbins because I didn’t keep track of temp. After that, I learned.

Will do!
Thanks!

I need to pick your brain about how you’ve got that dunking apparatus setup. ?.?.

Edit: I see it now. The coat hanger is bent to be able to support the legs of the pickup, then you just submerge it and let the longer length of the coat hanger is rest on the side of the crockpot so as to suspend the pickup. Very cool!!

Back in the 80's, Guitar Player Magazine featured an interview with Eddie Van Halen about how he potted his pickups... He used a coffee can and a hot plate as I remember (the horrors). Bad combo, of course - and Eddie remarked he had a few small fires. He also melted a genuine PAF once because he got distracted.

Of course - any kid with a little savvy and a science class knows a double boiler is better because the wax never gets hotter than boiling water. The dinky crockpot I purchased at a garage sale for a buck solves both the fire problem and the high heat problem. On low it barely gets above 140, which is hot enough for the purpose. Always wanted to add a vacuum pump to speed up the process, but it all got done anyway....

I took you’re (and Formula73’s) advise and got a $10 crock pot and some paraffin wax today...

Re: Wax potting

Almost ready for surgery.
Wax is melted and my jig is made...just need to let the wax cool down a bit more. It’s too hot right now.

And the finished product!

I’ll resolder it back in the guitar once it fully cools down. I’ll give it a couple of hours.

Re: Wax potting

Pickup has bee reinstalled.
Microphonics fixed!!!
That was such an easy thing to do.
Anybody that needs to have a pickup wax potted should give it a go....easiest thing in the world!

Re: Wax potting

It's something that I will eventually wind up doing to the bridge pickup in my 7-string.

I'm waiting until I have to change the strings again. Given that they're NYXL's it could be a while.
