Hahahaha. I saw it in the other thread, and I wasn't really sure to begin with if it was safe.

Re: WD-40 on strings

While WD-40 was invented as a cleaner, I wouldn't recommend it. Just change the strings - they're not that expensive.

Re: WD-40 on strings

I have used it with no ill effects on a finished maple fingerboard, but...

There are better products for string cleaning, like the Dunlop 65 String Cleaner.

yea.. rust cleaner on mechanical parts... NOT guitars.

if you have the strings on the guitar so long, that they rust, you could've easily saved up for another pack of strings in the meanwhile.

Re: WD-40 on strings

WD-40 is a hydrocarbon...the finish and paint on your guitar and perhaps fretboard is made form hydrocarbon.

like dissolves in like.

Re: WD-40 on strings

It'll age a fender neck like no one's business.... i know a local country act I sat in with on a few occasions. Both guitarist and bass player took out a big can of wd40 and a rag and oiled up their necks before we got started. Dude's tele neck looked like it was 80 years old.

Re: WD-40 on strings

WD-40 is purely a lubricant and it dries leaving no rust-preventing coating (learned that from a police armorer who hated seeing officers clean their gun with it)

I wouldn't get it anywhere NEAR my guitar finishes, cheap or not.

Spraying it on would also ensure that it would pool around the frets, soaking down into the fret slots, damaging the wood that holds your frets in!!

If we were living in 1929 during the depression, I could understand but geez, shell out a couple of dollars for real string cleaner.

Re: WD-40 on strings

Yep,
WD-40 while great as a lubricant for a squeaky cabinit door. Has NO business on a guitar. It eats finish, attracts dust, and as stated before just not a good idea!
