Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

Jolly, another forum to check out is the unofficial warmoth forum. Forum memeber tonar does EXCELLNT finishing work. I'm sure he wouldn't mind passing on some tips for your project.

The word has been mentioned already but I'll emphasize it again, Patience! Lots and lots if Patience.

In addition, DO NOT FORGET TO RUN THE GROUND WIRE FROM THE BRIDGE POST!

Thanks!! I had forgotten about it. I joined earlier this morning, and I've been reading quite a bit.

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

Is it done yet?

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

I'm going to attempt everything except for drilling the holes for the neck. This will be the first time I've ever tried to do anything really, so I'm sure I'll be doing a ton of reading and asking a ton of questions. The body isn't completely finished so I'm going to have do some sanding and all that. I don't think I've done any kind of woodworking since I was a Junior in High School....lol. I'll be reading my ass off about staining and finishing the body. As far as assembling everything, I don't think I'll have a problem with any of that.

I'm going to get the neck from Warmoth. It'll be maple with a rosewood fingerboard. I'm going to go with a reverse Jackson style headstock. I may get sharkfin inlays, but I'm not really sure yet. I really want to finish the back of the neck like my EVH Wolfgang Special.

As far as the body and everything goes, I'm probably going to go with a real vibrant purple most likely. My second choice is blue. I'll probably use gold hardware. The body is alder and the cap on it is 1/8" thick. I figured it was just a thin veneer, but the guy who made it told me how thick it was.

Get ready for me to be asking alot of stupid questions. Hopefully this won't take me a year to do, as I am rather lazy.

that's an awesome looking top Jolly! Good luck with the build!

That's awesome, my favourite non traditional body shape. Looking forward to seeing the end result... take your time.

That's a great site for build help, though I've not been on their for quite a while. Find DangerousR6 and see if he's still doing custom engraved neck plates. Come up with a design you like, and he'll program the CNC instructions to transfer it onto the plate - all done at very reasonable rates too.

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

May I suggest a straight up hand applied light satin Clear instead of the colors mentioned?

What kind of neck do you have? A Lefty Maple Tele with a nice Rosewood board and pearl dots might be something to think about.

Or this...

I actually thought about keeping it natural as well. I don't have a neck yet. I'll most likely go with a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard and a reverse Jackson headstock. I actually thought a Firebird headstock would look real good with it also.

Good luck. It should be fun.

Finishing isn't as hard as you might think. Lacquer is mystified on guitar forums, but it's actually very forgiving to work with. Much more so than polyurethane, at any rate. A purple stain, a few cans of Deft or ReRanch, some elbow grease, plenty of patience to try things out on scraps and wait for the right weather conditions, and you will have a great looking finish.

Purple will look brilliant. I had a PRS with a 10 top in purple. It was mind blowing beautiful.

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

I think I can be of help here. Take a look at one of my botch jobs as a great example of what NOT to do.

+1 finishing is made out to be a mysterious art especially nitro but if you do your research and take your time it's not that bad at all.

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

Yeah, I'll definitely be taking my time with it. I'm in no hurry.

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

dude thats gonna be sweet in purple!

Re: Well, I'm Going To Attempt My First Guitar Assembly

Any clear finish will look great, but that beauty deserves a little bit of color. For your consideration:
