Well...i've come to a conclusion!

i LOVE TELECASTERS!!!!

i went out yesterday to "finally" try to play a Taylor T5 at my local shop...(not happening btw...he's only got 5 coming in for the rest of the year and they are all already sold!!!!)

anyways, after i find this out...of all the guitars in the store...i alway start at the Teles :smack: and here the past few times i've been in there...a Hwy 1 in blonde keeps callin my name!

i freakin love that Tele!!! i love it!!! i can't get over how good a telecaster fits in my hands...they are just the most comfortable to me...the necks are perfect, the weight is just right and i just love the fender neck scale the best...i've determined this...i can't stand anything smaller than 25 1/2!!! the space between the frets is just to small, i feel like i'm playing a toy...i guess thats because i'm used to my big ol P-bass, but it just feels better!!!

i even put it down for awhile and played some other guitars...i played some Godin's...which i've decided that the necks are just too flat for me..i like the width of them, but they are way to shallow in my hands...some strats...which i like too (mostly becasue of the scale...lol)...and i even played a Hamer Studio Custom but it just didn't "feel" right...hard to explain  :smack: i kept going back to that hwy 1!? of course i played all of em through the best sounding amp that i've personally ever played to date...the Rivera Fandango...i just love that amp, but that's another story!

secondly, Teles just look like a guitar is supposed to look...i love the shape, the simplicity of it, the rock solid feel of them, when i'm holding one i feel like i really got something ya know?!

Next is the neck pups...i love the single coil neck pickups in teles, it even sounded pretty good with the stock hwy pup that was in there, not awesome, but good!

i also LOVE the thin finish on the Hwy 1's...just like what has always been said...it is MUCH more resonant than a standard finish...and i actually like the way it looks...the blonde is my favorite finish on them, but i really wish they had one in white blonde too!?

but......here's my only hang up with Teles and i mean it's the ONLY thing i don't like about them...i love everything else........!?

i really can't stand the bridge pups in them...i don't like it at all....i know, i know, that's what really makes a tele a tele...but...i don't like the twang :burnout:  it's not that i don't like country music...i do...it's a part of me...but i don't want to play it...ever. :22: so, that's my quandry if you will...i wish they had humbuckers in the bridge with single coil necks and the bridge itself could use a bit of an upgrade too...if i ever get a hwy 1, i'm gonna make it look like this eventually!

haha...i knew that would get a bit of a response...lol!

even if i could get it to sound a bit P-90ish...it wouldn't be so bad...just don't really care for the bitey twang thang that the bridges always produce...i know...i'm moron...i'm fully aware... :)

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

I believe the characteristic tone of the Tele comes from the interaction of the bridge with the pickup.

You may wish to try a different Tele pickup in the bridge. I have a Harmonic Design "Super 90" in my Tele- it's the best imaginable cross between a Telecaster and a Les Paul Junior. It looks like a Tele pickup with adjustable pole pieces like on a P-90.

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

thats my baby...a honey blond HW1 Tele! I put a black guard on myne as well as Brass Saddles (Brass saddles will help tame the twang a bit) as well as new vintage style tuners (I just don't like anything beside Klusons on a Fender), then I topped it off with a set of Custom Shop Duncans...it still has Tele twang but it's not the overly brittle/bright that it had stock. I love the HW1 guitars, and I have a feeling that im gonna have more of them!

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

oh yeah...almost forgot...i also played a used Schecter Pt..t was solid black with cream binding and a thick poly finish neck...felt real good, it was definitely "used", but had no other markings on it as in a "made in wherever"...it had two black covered hums and a black sixsaddle hardtail bridge...the pups were bad...didn't sound good at all...but the neck did feel good and the rest of the guitar wasn't to bad...definitely had potential...? anyone have any experiences with these?!

Hoss,

What kind of headstock did the PT have?

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

oh man...i'm trying to remember...trying to remember...i'm almost positive it looked just like a regular fender tele shaped headstock with just "schecter" writen on it in black...it was an all maple/maple neck

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

Mike,
I think you'd like the JD in the bridge.

if it comes to it, though, it might be routed H/S/H

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

yeah...i'd definitely have to do some "experimenting" in the bridge...i've heard there are some "voodoo" pups that sound good in the bridge of teles too...if i get one...i'll have to do some research for sure?!

the Fender headstock Schecters afre MIA and are amazing guitars! Several years ago I passed on a black with black hardware Schecter PT with a maple/maple neck...at the time I didn't like maple :smack: It was a great guitar, and it's one of the ones I wish I had not let get away!

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

REEEEEEEAAAAALLLY.....hmmm...i think i'll stop by there today and see how much he wants for it...? i did a google search and it looked exactly like this one!

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

if that one is anything like the one i played...it had all black hardware to...it was just faded and rubbing off.

i felt great...i just didn't dig the pups...but of course that can be changed...now where could i find info on aftermarket pickups...lol

Golden Boy...whats the specs on your Tele?
Every guitar has it's story!
That's a mid-90's MIJ 60's RI.

It used to be a FotoFlame, a really garish clownburst with a mother of toilet seat pickguard.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted an Olympic White Tele with a white guard and a rosewood fingerboard because of Jimmy Page
pg_005.jpg

I sanded it down and gave it a Krylon finish :) (almond if you're interested!)
The pickups are Harmonic Design Super 90 in the bridge and a HD Vintage Plus in the neck. I went through a lot of different Tele pickups with this and I used to have a 65 Esquire (that was THE guitar used on the BoDeans Love Hope Sex and Dreams album). I really wanted a big, ballsy pickup that looked somewhat stock and I tried everything I could get my hands on. These pickups are not just a hot Tele pickup- it really does sound more like a P-90 in a Tele.

I also have always hated the stock pickup selector slider switch, so I replaced it with an up/down toggle- it's easier and quicker to switch pickups. It's wired with bridge volume forward, neck volume rear, and the middle is tone for the neck pickup (with treble bleed cap).

With the guitar, pickups, pickguard, pot, DYMO label tape, aluminum jack cup and extra super custom paint job- I've got about $500 into it- and it's a rock machine that I'm not afraid to beat on or take anywhere.

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

I have two and I know what you are saying. I love them also, but I tend to lean more towards a Strat. I have a a 52' RI that a good friend gave me :) I will be putting in a vintage '54 in the neck and JD in the bridge. I have the Vintage 54, I am waiting on the JD. Can't wait to get those PUPS in.

I also have a California Tel, which has a Tele Bridge, and a Strat neck... very cool guitar. Candy Apple red with rw board.

Re: Well...i've come to a conclusion!

Hey Mike....mine has a 4-way switch that I don't quite get(it does bridge/bridge-middle wired in parallel(?) which sounds like a humbucker/bridge-neck regular(series)/neck).

The combined humbucker tone is a little more like a P90 & sounds super sweet thru a Marshall.

That might be the ticket too for you...gives you the twang option if wanted.
