Well, You Knew It Was Going To Happen: New Amp Day, Marshall SL-5

Re: Well, You Knew It Was Going To Happen: New Amp Day, Marshall SL-5

I have a quick question: marshall's website says el34, doesn't it mean el84? El34 is good for 8-11 watts in single ended mode iirc
Nope, EL34.

You don't have to run a tube flat out in every design. The Blackstar HT 20, 40 and 50 all use exactly the same power amp tube setup.

Total Marshall with bass, mid, treble on 6-7, pre gain backed down to 4-5 1/2, and the volume on about 6. Backing the pre gain down is even better with the volume turned up. It gets a little mushy with the volume cranked and the pre gain up as well. Great little amp!!

COOL! Good to know its a great amp, instead of just another turd with an artist's name on it..

I wouldn't be surprised if the topology of the amp was really close to the Jet City PicoValve but with some component values tweaked.

I'm horrible at reviews. Anyone else with one agree with aforementioned statements?

I wish almost all the lunchbox and low wattage tube combos would start using one large bottle tube, rather than two EL-84's. For those that don't like the loose bottom and brittle highs of EL-84's, having one EL-34 is perfect.

The single EL-34 and Celestion V30 is what makes the little Slash amp sound as good as it does.......like a scaled down little Marshall Jubilee.

^ That's one thing I like about the Splawn Super Sport, it uses 2-6v6s instead of El84s, I think it sounds much better.

I totally agree. all (well, most) the new mini amps are using el84s and honestly, just doesnt sound the same to me. As far as the mini versions of a bigger head. There is no comparing on the amps that are new creations.. But tonally, Id prefer a bigger bottle on most. PLUS, I would think that R+D and everything would be alot simpler in that if you have a 100 watt tube amp with 4-el34s or 6l6s or whatever, I think it would be simpler to just use 1 of the same tube and scale everything back, then to try to create the same tone using a diff type of tube..
