Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
Today, I had a few hours to kill in the city next to UCLA, Westwood, Ca.
There's a great boutique music store there called Westwood Music, which has been a staple store for lots of classic artists like....well, all of them! :)

They have a big showroom of high end acoustics, which is their bread and butter, then as you walk into the big backroom, there's about one hundred boutique amps, and guitars you've never heard of...mostly small luthier companies.

I saw amps from Matchless, Badcat, Bogner, THD, Victoria, Belov, Diaz, Roccaforte, Budda, Alessandro, and Mojave. Fun Fun Fun!!!

I brought that Schecter Custom Shop Tele with me, since I was headed over to Revolutionguitar.com's Ebay Store Warehouse after spending a few hours at Westwood Music.

The first thing in the store that grabbed my eye was Home Brew Electronic's
(H.B.E.) Mudhoney. It's a fuzz pedal that I saw Scott Henderson using, and also has a good buzz on harmony. So, I plugged the Tele into the Mudhoney, into a Bogner Shiva 1-12 EL-34 combo. My heart started racing because I swear, I nailed the most awesome fuzz tone I'd ever heard. The Shiva, by itself, is an awesome tone, but with this Mudhoney, it was like a corpulent fuzz that blats out on just the right tones, giving that sludgy Hendrix tone, but better. Even the owner of the store, who was working in his office, came out to see what the hell he just heard. I was going through some Mark Knopfler/Hendrixy type licks, and the tone was just pure magic.

Anyway, moving along to the Matchless DC-30, probably the greatest EL-84 amp ever made. The glassy cleans just engulf the room, when you crank one of those up! Then, the THD Flexi 50. Just like a big Plexi with more grind, like the Shiva. The Mojave Coyote was what I'd expected, a grindier, bigger sounding JTM 45. Man, amps have come a long way, from the 40's till now.

Then, a trip over to Todd's revolutionguitar.com, and I got to talk about tube amps for an hour, while grabbing the Marshall heads in his collection onto a 4-12, and ripping into whatever riffs fit the sound of the Marshall. It's very telling of Marshalls to be able to swap them within minutes, and hear the nuances and best dialings of each type. He had a late Seventies 50W MKII, which had that 'in your face garage rock type tone, ala Ramones. Then, I put a heavily modded 70 Superlead through it's paces. Everything from AC/DC to G. Lynch. Then, his loud ass grandaddy, a stock 71 Superlead with new Teslas. That thing could rearrange furniture! I forgot that the original Superlead 100's are just as loud as new Plexi 100's, but a sweeter tone. After killing our ears for half an hour on the aptly named Superlouds, we moved down to the small 20 W Fargen Blackbirds? A far different animal...6V6 grindy blues tone is what those were about, or a sweet Deluxe Reverb type cleans, appropriate for roots rock.

It's been a pretty fun day in toyland. I went out shopping for a Tele switch tip, since mine was long gone, and ended up shopping in the best stores possible, just to find that $3 plastic part. Man, I feel like such a stroke! :laugh2:

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Maybe some day... we'll all own one... or two... or all of them! Moohahaha (evil-type laugh-thingy)

Peace.

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

If I ever come down there, I need to hire you for the day to shuttle me around to all of the guitar stores (the good ones). I love shops with good equipment. I tried out a '54 L.P. TV special yesterday.........sweet guitar! Like I said I LOVE GOOD EQUIPMENT!!!!!!

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

I don't make a habit of frequenting music stores TOO much, but must admit, I used to do it a lot. Nowadays, I'm bored walking into Sam Ash or GC, only cause there's nothing there that I can't see in a typical Musician's Fiend Magazine.

Fortunately, guitar has gotten so big, there's more stores out there, so I tend to check out all the good stuff at the stores owned by real gear afficionados. They always stock the stuff that some people will pay more for. Plus, in bigger cities, you're more likely to run into a name player, which is always cool.
One time, I was in Westwood Music and actually talked to both Robbie Krieger from the Doors, and Mark Shanks (Melissa Etheridge). That's the clientele you attract when everything in your store is 'the best.' It would be so awesome to have an elite music store like that!

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

i saw the title of the thread, and said to myself, prepare for a massive gas attack, followed by, what did he get now that i can steal?

than iread it, had my gas attack, but was dissapointed there is nothing new to claim for our upcoming theft..

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Ah Joneser.....sounds like a good time...how are the ears??
HBE makes some awesome pedals......uh I wish we had some more of those here??
Yeah I know about the part not bugging the music stores too much, I rarely go to them anymore, only if I need something that I cannot get at work.

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Westwood Music has some really cool stuff. They had a 59 LP Re-Issue that was awesome.

My favorite place in the West Hollywood area has to be Black Market Music.
Ever been Gearjoneser? They have an amazing collection of rarities and vintage gear. Last time I was there I played through Noel Reddings old Sound City bass rig...good god!

Anyways, really really cool shop, run by cool guys who will let you pick anything they have and plug it in. It's just north of the Westwood mall (La Cienega?)

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Oh yeah, Blackmarket Music is a great vintage gear store. Of course, you won't find many bargains there, but since they're smack dab in the middle of Hollywood, they've raided the closets of many local players. I find stuff in there that I've never even heard of! If you want vintage FX pedals, they've got them all! Last time I was in there, Weezer was buying a bunch of stuff. That store is about a block south of Santa Monica Blvd, on La Cienega - right in between Sunset Blvd's "guitar row" and the Melrose tourist area.

This could be like that Seinfeld episode, where Kramer puts on the "Peterman Reality" tour or something like that. It would be the "Gearjoneser reality tour." We could go to Jonesers place, by day Jones could take us to cool music shops, and by night Joneser could take us on a tour of the mighty Sunset Strip nightspots. It would be like, "this shop is where Lynch bought his purple Plexi... that's Dee Rhoades' music store....right here is where Eddie first did a two-hand tap... over here is where me and Vince took on a few ladies... I had drinks in this booth with Slash and Traci Lords... and I threw up on this sidewalk with CC Deville."

What fun!!

Sounds good.

It's funny that you mentioned that Mudhoney pedal. I was just looking at that this morning (reading a guitar book on a 14hr. car trip). Glad to hear it rules, I may think about picking it up (for the few times I actually do use that much distortion).

Come to think of it, I could be a tour guide. But it get's better. I also used to be the "delivery guy to the stars" when I was 20-23, so I know all the homes in Bel Aire, Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Hollywood Hills. Name a star, I'll take you to their house. Jack Nicholson? Arnold Shwartzeneger? How bout the OJ crime scene? And Jammermatt, guess where I lived for the one year I wasn't in LA, during my teens? Yep, the Camas, Wa. area./Vancouver. :smack:

Re: Went to a Boutique Amp Store Today

Joneser in the 'Couv?

It's a wonder you ever learned to rock spending your teens in the Couv. We've got like one rock station and it is not all that great. I grew up on the Oregon coast which made it real hard, being the only Iron Maiden fan in the whole county.

Vancouver is probably close to what you remember, but Camas has grown alot with some hi-tech firms moving in. I work in dowtown Portland now, but I worked in the 'Couv when I relocated to Camas. The paper mill still stinks the place up from time to time.

We do have a few music stores. We still have Apple Music and Portland Music, which were around when you were here. They are locally owned and pretty alright. GC has moved in and I refuse to go there, but they seem to thrive without me anyway.

However, we have a coffee shop on every corner, and a strip club on every other corner... so there are some bennies to living here :laugh2:

About the only celebrity home I could take you to around here would be Tanya Harding's trailer. :alcoholic
