Went to Hollywood GC

I had a seminar Los Angeles today.. drove to Hollywood and stayed the night last night, about a block away from my old apartment.. dirty sleazy neighborhood for the most part :D

The Hollywood GC store stays open til 9p or so, and I figured that I would check it out since I was close by. When I lived in the area, I rarely went in there because I couldn't stand the sales people.. some things don't change I guess :D

Anyway, I was disappointed that they did not have any of the new fat teles by Fender, and their prices were not that great either.. am I spoiled or something? They seemed to have the latest Marshalls, but I did not try any, because it was getting kinda close to closing time, and they had a Vox ac30 fired up.. there was a guy playing some pretty cool old school stuff on it.. Wow! That is a killer amp. It reminded me of my plexi in a way, but it broke up a lot quicker and the tone was dark but very sustaining and thick.. very cool amp :D

They had a very good selection of Duncan pickups. I almost walked out with an APII bridge but I have a phat cat on the way already.. I also have a custom shop pickup that I have not even installed yet! One at a time eh?? I also liked this used (newlike) SG, which I could have picked up for $500... resisted... good boy.. but I might have got it if my car was not so far away :D

That store has a couple other stores around it, like Carvin and a couple of vintage shops.. they were closed though.. bummer, those shops are not as predictable

After that, I ate dinner at this over rated "Italian Brazillian" cuisine place

Re: Went to Hollywood GC

Did you go back into the vintage section? I make a beeline for that big wooden room in the back, to see the great vintage collection they have in there. Is that where you heard the AC-30? Man, I'd love to have a giant wooden room like that to play in!
Everything sounds great in that room, and their amp collection is usually stuff that's raided from LA's best collections....they even bought Aspen Pitman's amp collection when he was trying to raise money for new machines for his GT factory.
I wonder if GC is going to let Clapton's Blackie sit in a glass display in there???
That's probably the place they'll display it most.

Man when i went into that vintage room for the first time earlier this year and found a vintage 4x10 Bassman, 50's and 60's Strats, Old Plexis and 800's all in the same room I was compelled to take off my sandals... for i was standing on holy ground :D :smoker:

Re: Went to Hollywood GC

When I was out in L.A. last year my brother and I trekked off to GC Hollywood. He works a few blocks from the place and seemed like a capable guide. We hit most of the shops around that area. Most of the shops that weren't GC were more fun to go into.

GC Hollywood could burn down and it wouldn't be a total loss unless the flames got to the Vintage Room.

Re: Went to Hollywood GC

How many other streets, besides Sunset Blvd, can you walk into a GC, Manny's/Sam Ash, Carvin, Voltage Guitars, and a fully stocked Mesa Boogie outlet?
Heck, they even have a place that makes Spanish guitars by hand, across the street, and used to have another vintage shop, and an amp shop. Those two folded.

damn straite, every time I vacation to So Cal I head for that location. I love all the vintage dobro's and stuff in those back rooms all catagorized into cool niche rooms for the heavy duty guitar junkies like my self to lust after. I hit the boogie shop acrossed the street and over alittle on the corner to see the latest stuff and they also have some high end guitars to lust. Hollywood strip is always a freak show kinda fun to check out and the clubs......buy a pass to the wisky and you can walk acrossed the street if you dont like the band and walk into the other club with its line ups as well cuz its 2 clubs for the price of one each club has 2 or three bands at least each on the weekends so you have a huge selection to choose from. want a quik eat? walk down Hollywood to the late night pizza shops and stuff-its all good or zoom away and hang somewhere else like the rainbow or where ever, its all good. Everybody needs to do it atleast a few times in thier life dont they-hell your only young once :beerchug:

Yeah I noticed that.. that kinda bummed me out. I admit that I am a little sour towards gc these days. I actually studied their financials in one of my business classes, and that did not help my image of them much more.. the evil musical instrument empire haha :laugh2:

Back when I was actually a musician, I remember buying a keyboard at that store when it was smaller and had no parking. It was always that stupid wheelin dealin game with the sales staff. The sales drone wanted me to pay $1400 for this unit. I pulled $700 out of my pocket and showed him that my other pockets were empty. I told him to take the money and show it to his manager.. he took the money and came back empty handed.. I left with the keyboard.. kinda like buying a car I guess :D
