WGS Speaker recommendations???

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

I had the et65/retro 30 combine in an avatar 2x12. I always had a metallic like rasp that I couldn't get rid of....... until I got rid of the retro. I put another et65 in and problem solved.

I want to try the reaper Hp, lead 80, and the invader.
I am looking for something a little brighter to balance out the fat mids of the et65 but without the upper mid spike of a celestion vintage 30.

Does amp have a treble and presence control? :)
Vet30/ET65 works well and it is the recommended pair by WGS.

Don't knock V30s. They are my KING speaker. I never gave them a chance in the past, but with all the amps in my house right now, Bogner Shiva, PWE Event Horizon and Mesa Boogie ED, they all ROCK the best with broken in V30s. In a band setting, V30s are a beautiful thing. I stood all over the room at our last rehearsal which another guitarist played my rig with V30s and it was glorious. :)

With my last band, I had a MKIII with Greenbacks and the other guitarist had a Single Recto with V30s. Those two amp/speakers complimented SOOO well.

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

Paper - yeah, myamp has both. To me, the retro has that high mid spike of a vintage 30 as well as a sparkly high end. No matter what i did, I couldn't dial that harshness out.

I really wanted to like it. So much so, that I swapped it back in 4times. Each time it came back out.

It was more noticeable on the clean channel.

To me, the Retro 30 is like a blend of both a V30 and T75.
It has the mids and growl of a V30, and the deep tight bass and sizzling highs of a T75.

I will tell you with my PWE head or Shiva, ther is NO harshness anywhere with the V30s in my Bogner 212. :)

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

van noord nailed it! there definitely is a sizzle to it. i think that is what is killing it for me.
i have listened to wgs's comparison vids on yt last night and have to say that i like their vet30 much better. i might actually give it a try.

I was actually going to go with the et65/vet30 combo instead, but went with the retro instead as i thought the deeper bottom end and extra high end would be "more of a good thing" . not so.

to me, deep bass and bright highs don't translate well into high gain. sorta like the gain accentuates them more. especially the higher you put it.

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

I think I have everything cover:
Bogner 212OS - Hellatone V30s (best with my amps)
Stone Age 212 - WGS Invaders (Great Greenback flavor!)
THD 212 - THD Longhorn and Vintage

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

OK guys...I want to order some WGS speakers today! I just got a new Stone Age 212 cab empty! I play a Bogner Shiva, PWE Event Horizon and Egnater Mod 50 incoming. I want to replace the Vintage 30s in my Bogner with Retro 30s. This cab is semi open! In my Stone Age 212C, semi open back, I am thinking two ET65s, ET65/Vet30, ET65/Retro30, two Invaders or Invader/ET65
A friend told me the Invaders do not work well in a semi open back. :(
In my THD, I am thinking ET65/Reaper 50, or an ET65 paired with something?

Thanks! :approve:

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

Retro 30s sound very similar to Vintage 30s, but not as spiky. they have a bit more chime in the high end too.

They'd pair well with ET65s or Reapers.

The Reaper/ET65 combo is also a good one, according to the WGS folks.

Thanks bro!

Daniel at WGS says Vet30/ET65 is most 3D and deep. He recommends two Invaders in my Stone Age, but my buddy Rob said the Invader is not working in a semi open back!

Vaughn at WGS recommends:
ET65/Reaper = smoothest overall pairing

ET65/Invader = More aggressive (marshallesque)

ET65/Retro 30 = the best of both

From WGS knowing my amps and cabs:

All your combo thoughts sound pretty good. Especially if your amps are dark, I would stay away from the Veterans. The Retros would be a much better option. Based on what you described in your other emails and this one, here is what sounds like would be the best fits:

Stone Age: 2 - ET65
THD: - Retro 30/ET65
Bogner: 2 - Retro 30s
.

Ditto... :thumbs up: on the Retro 30 and Invader combo...

What I really love about WGS speakers is... The midrange tone is always good!
No matter which speaker you choose... There is never this cardbox box sound, unlike Eminence...
And the top end is always smooth... unlike some Celestions.

Have you ever played a Swamp Thang. The mids are anything BUT cardboard box sound. Very full, warm, complex, and rich sounding.

Re: WGS Speaker recommendations???

I have used several WGS speakers. My favorite combo in a closed back 2/12 so far is a Vet30/Retro 30. The vet is dark and scooped but very smooth while the Retro is tighter on the bottom has a nice mid cut and is brighter on the top. Together the 2 sound fantastic.
Right now I'm running a Retro in my Zinky Velvet combo and a Vet in my Blackstar 1/12 both 16 ohms. When I stack the combo on the cab and run both it's jaw droppingly good!
I normally prefer the Vet in an open back cab and the Retro in a closed back but wanted the extra chime for the Velvet cleans.
