WGS Speakers

Do they stack up to Eminence and Celestion? I'm thinking (and this won't be short term) eventually about putting together a 2x12 with Greenbacks (or clones), and I wonder how the Private Jack or the Green Beret stack up against each other and against the real thing.

And let's leave the value thing out of it for a minute. If you could take any of the three, would you hesitate to take the Green Berets?

Re: WGS Speakers

look...i know i have very limited experience with them...but i've never heard a bad thing about them anywhere...look at the list of amp companies that use them http://www.wgs4.com/builders

i'm already making plans to replace the Vintage 30 in my Traynor with a Retro 30!

Re: WGS Speakers

I have used the hm75, veteran 30, et-65. Yes they stack up. Wonderful speakers. Not better but a different take on similar sounds. They are cheaper than both but dont equate that to quality.

Re: WGS Speakers

I'm using WGS Green Berets in my Crate Vintage Club, & they're amazingly good. I put Veteran 30's in my friend's JCM800 combo, and they kick butt.

Re: WGS Speakers

i replaced my emi's with WGS speakers and so far i am very happy, the emi's have a great sound but they make a loud amp even louder and volume is the last thing i need...

Re: WGS Speakers

what amp you looking to put one in?

I am in the infancy of a plan to build two amps. The second will be a head in the 30 watt zone. I would build a closed back 1-12 and an open back 2-10 so I could use either one or combine them for the few outdoor unmic'd situations. I think the combination would be killer. Also, I will build an iso cabinet for recording at home and to make my life simpler in a couple of churches where extrmely low stage volumes are required.

First, though, I need to build a smaller, 5E3 (ish) combo for the experience.

everything sucks and everything does not suck, at the same time. You're halfway to enlightenment.

when a man achieves enlightenment, it goes like this:

First, guitar speakers are guitar speakers.
Then, guitar speakers are not guitar speakers.
Finally, guitar speakers are again guitar speakers.

meditate on that one. Or don't. I don't care.

Re: WGS Speakers

I haven't directly compared them (WGS) but they do have a higher efficiency (100dB) meaning they match with other speakers better then greenbacks. I really like the sound of my cab. So +1 for WGS

Re: WGS Speakers

I would dump on a 'wgs' speaker..It might make me regular again..but I wouldnt play through one.

Re: WGS Speakers

given the choice I'd go with the Private Jack I had one in a Carvin amp and it was amazing. For the miniscule price difference I'd go PJ, plus the PJ is made in USA.

Currently all my speakers are Webers, but Eminence are my second choice sometimes my first it just depends.

But I'd definitely take a WGS over a Celestion. I wouldn't look at what mfr's use because sometimes they cut corners on speakers that they install on amps, they just go with whatever meets their spec and costs the least amount of money. That may not always deliver you the highest quality end product, sometimes it does YMMV.

unfortunately this is a subjective matter.

Re: WGS Speakers

We forgot you were the master of tone Jer.

I'm the master of nothing...
but okay, I admit- its reactionary..I grew up with Celestions. Eminence have slowly and painstakingly gained a decent reputation..around here ya gotta earn your stripes..am I wrong?
Its part of a dynamic process at this point with the WGS speakers.
Just because some amps endorse them isn't proof positive at this point they are as good as the best.
I'm too old to have an open mind..if they are good speakers, then sooner or later it'll be common knowledge.
My take at this point is that they are good, but not as good as Celestions or even Emi's, so until and unless they have gained a reputation as anything other than cheaper alternatives, I'm gonna ride with what brought me here.

Re: WGS Speakers

Have WGS vet 30 in my 1990 Marshall 2501 combo. It had a Celestian 75 in it when I got it and I went through several Celestians and Eminences I had on had as well as the WGS before I settled on one. The WGS was what I went with and never looked back.
BIG WGS fan here!

You are very wise Grasshopper

Re: WGS Speakers

Just put a Green Beret in a 2x12 cab alongside a Weber G12H30-55 clone and I would buy from WGS again. I like it more than the Weber.
