WGS Speakers

Re: WGS Speakers

i would say that i am a WGS fan , as i have over 20 of them, mostly vet30, but a couple of green beret's & a G12H30 55 herts that i replaced a Celestion30 with in my carvin 4x12, (top right)the 30 was too bright) i still like certain celestions, but when it comes to buying new , i will go with WGS, to each his/her own , just my opinion..

Re: WGS Speakers

One common complaint...
...........most of the WGS speakers are smoother and darker than their Celestion counterparts. Smoother and darker is great when you're playing by yourself at home, but not so great at a gig.

Re: WGS Speakers

I just put a Celestion Greenback (new) in the same cab I had a WGS Green Beret in and I really ought to mic each one up and see the qualitative differences... I would need another of the same mic in order to do it properly.

Re: WGS Speakers

Do they stack up to Eminence and Celestion? I'm thinking (and this won't be short term) eventually about putting together a 2x12 with Greenbacks (or clones), and I wonder how the Private Jack or the Green Beret stack up against each other and against the real thing.

And let's leave the value thing out of it for a minute. If you could take any of the three, would you hesitate to take the Green Berets?

FWIW . . . i found this :

I like the WGS GB's core tone !

Re: WGS Speakers

FWIW, I use (2) G10C/S speakers in my Vibrolux Reverb. They seem to make the amp more balanced than the Celestion G10L-35s I used to have in there and they hold together a million times better than the original speakers. They are a bit darker and smoother (I will admit there isn't quite as much clarity as the G10L-35s), but in some ways I like that now I can actually use the "bright" switch on my Fender whereas before the icepick would always make it unthinkable. I like that they're very solid sounding speakers; I don't have to worry about the lowend overpowering them or the higher volume settings making them unusable, they really maintain good tone coloration throughout the volume control. I may end up swapping out one speaker so that I can really hear the different speakers side to side in the same cab (because I'm going from my memory of what the Celestions used to sound like in there).

I LOVE the G10C in my VHT!

Very true. The same can be said for Emi's versions of Celestion speakers and also Weber's versions of Celestion speakers. Like you, I prefer the brighter, (and crunchier) sound of my Celestions.

Smoother and darker is great when you're playing by yourself at home, but not so great at a gig.

I do like the WGS speakers I've heard though. I go to a lot of blues jams at local clubs and I jammed with a guy who had a WGS "vintage" set in a silverface Pro Reverb.

I didn't find them to smooth or to dark at all. I did find them to be less bright and less crunchy compared to my real Celestions but I liked what I was hearing from this guy. He's a real good player though - that certainly helps.

Got me thinking about a set for myself.

Re: WGS Speakers

Well, I gotta admit... in my Vibrolux Reverb I gave the G10C/S speakers an honest A/B with the old Celestion G10L-35s that I originally had in there today and I prefer the old Celestions (even if you don't read the best things about them online). Sometimes you have to try something for a few months at a time and really assess what you're looking for and whether or not the "new and best" stuff out there is really worth sticking with.

Here's my .02 on the G10C/S WGS speakers. They're fat, smooth, they hold together exceptionally well and the efficiency of the speakers means you get more volume out of them and much more use out of your volume knobs in general. The speakers are quite beautiful to look at and are incredibly well built. For a bright and sometimes harsh amp like a Hot Rod Deluxe these would be great. For a jazz musician, I think these would fit the bill nicely. For my application, I found I liked the Celestions better. I actually like the thinner, softer tone of the G10L-35s and I found the bassier tone of the G10C/S just doesn't fit the tone of this particular amp as well. I have to admit, the full tone of the Vibrolux with the G10C/S is something to behold, but there's more character to the amp with the G10L-35s. The G10C/S sure can take a beating though - they're such substantial speakers and the punch and authority to them (especially the bass response) are no doubt the appeal.

So there you have it. Thanks Jerry for inspiring me to revisit my speakers and play around with them. If anything, this just shows you how you can trick yourself into thinking certain things based off of memory. I'm finally starting to learn that sometimes stock stuff is great. Heck, the PRS McCarty, this Vibrolux Reverb scenario, even resorting to the stock pickups on the Telecaster are all amazing me. Crazy to think I've changed stuff for the sake of changing stuff without any real reason for it. I really forgot how much I love the G10L-35s, screw the haters on those things.

Re: WGS Speakers

Two months later... I want to add my two cents... I think they are great!
I prefer them to Celestion... and Eminence can't even begin to compare.

Re: WGS Speakers

They're great.

I have Retro30s in my cab alongside a pair of Celestion G1265s. The retro 30s are very much like Celestion Vintage 30s, even moreso than the Veteran 30s. But they are also a bit more chimey in the high end, and have a nice even sounding midrange (no annoying upper mid spike like in the Vintage 30s). Still have a lot of presence, and sound great mic'd up.

Re: WGS Speakers

I've been very happy with my Veteran 30s in my JCM800 combo. I initially thought they were super bright (which of course, got me a little disappointed), but now, they're rockin' speakers especially cranked up!

I still hadn't got the chance to play around with the Invader in my JCM900 combo though. I hope it'll be as good as I hope it would be.

Though, if money wasn't an issue, I would probably still buy Celestions.

Re: WGS Speakers

Just dropped a WGS Reto 30 into my Zinky Velvet combo to replace the Zinky labeled Eminence that was in the amp stock. It was like I instantly took a blanket off the amp. Where the tones had been boxie and harsh now they soar. The cleans in particular were a HUGE improvement but the crunch side also was instantly bigger rounder and smoother.
I have replaced both Celestians and Eminences with WGS speakers and never looked back.
They hold there own with speakers that cost 2x as much and for me I actually have liked them better more than once in a head to head with both the Celestians and Eminences I have had on hand.
Like them a LOT!
