What 6L6 for Twin Reverb '72 SF

Re: What 6L6 for Twin Reverb '72 SF

The workarounds and alternate routes just to save a few dollars ?

I predict another thread later asking about why it doesn't sound quite right, and what can be done about it? with replies like "dude change yer tubes, get these other ones over here!!!" without realizing the tubes you already have weren't really installed correctly, in order to sound good?

... with the real answer in that case being the same answer and the same first step as now: good matched tubes and a bias for them.

From there you can better hear what needs a tweak or a change, if any is in fact needed.

but for your question right now, if you're buying the tubes from the amp shop, the amp shop should know which tubes they get locally in Japan that are the most consistent and reliable, shouldn't they? Maybe we should know what they have in the shop to choose from, first?

my brain hurts dude

No, they're because I'm in Japan and shipping a Twin is expensive.

got 2 layers of lead shielding here, here goes ...

where is the amplifier, my friend? if the amp is headed toward you at X velocity, what is your Y, and how?

Re: What 6L6 for Twin Reverb '72 SF

Robert, can I add something a bit off topic?

I played one of these once with a Boss Metalcore in front of it. Dude, I could happily gig and record with just that, and if it was my only rig I'd be happy.

no matter what you do I bet it will be okay as long as you get to turn it up now and then

A 72 Twin is gonna have a bias balance control unless it has been modified...the bias isn't adjustable but you can adjust it to reduce hum.

For most Twin players, they never drive the tubes to a point that any coloration difference is detectable. In other words, you will likely never hear a difference between winged Cs, Sovteks or a pricey set of NOS tubes...provided they are of similar current draw.

I like the SED/Winged Cs in my Mesas. The Groove Tubes 6L6-GE is another great tube for a Fender or Fender-based amp design.

The Electro-Harmonix 6L6 is a good budget choice, but I too would strongly suggest that you replace all four of the power tubes with a closely matched set, properly biased.

Amp is in Texas.

Will be shipped when I can afford to.
