What Active Pickups?

Hey Guys.. I'm going to be buying a new guitar at tax time and I'm trying to figure out what Active pups to use.. I'm really wanting a guitar with active pups that doesn't have the output of the EMG's.. so I can use it for everything from Country to Metal so to speak, and I hear that the Duncans are good for this, except for the Metal Live Wires I think they are called? The guitar I'm thinking of getting is probably going to be either a Gibson LP Studio or Swamp ash body or something like a Robin two humbucker guitar .. Any suggestions on pups? Either two humbuckers or three singles.. active? Sorry, I know my question is a little vague..

Thanks
Tim

Re: What Active Pickups?

You can get the Livewire classics. They dont have insaine output.

Re: What Active Pickups?

if you're going for a strat style, the EMG DG20 set covers a lot of ground. I do everything from country to metal with no problems with the set I have in my strat.

Benjy..
Thank you so much, but I'm not really familiar with that set of pups. Can you point me toward the URL for them or somewhere where I can learn more? Are they really high output, or can I use my volume control to clean them up, etc, like I can with non active / passive pups? Does Duncan make them already wired, or do you know where I can buy them as such?
Thanks a million..

Re: What Active Pickups?

Oh, Also, what humbuckers are the equal to say the DG20 set? I mean in output at least.. Don't have to have the same tone.. I'm thinking I might end up with two humbuckers instead of three singles, but I doubt it.. I might end up though with another guitar / Gibson with two humbuckers and I'd like the pups to be the same in output.. Nothing drives me nuts more than changing guitars and the output / volume being different.. or volume being much lower or higher with the same amp settings.. I'm poor so I can't have a ton of guitars and amps and I'm trying to get by with a Strat and an LP guitar and one backup for a blues band / 3 piece in which I play both Rythem and Lead..
Thanks so much..

I don't know the URL, but they are on EMG's site. They're Gilmour's signature set, which should give you an idea of their tone.

To me, the pickups themselves seem like sligtly overwound traditional strat pickups. They're a bit rounder and have more mids than, say, an APS-1, but they are not hot by any standards.

Where they get their punch though is in the on board electronics. Instead of having a volume and two tones, you get a volume, an EXG, and a SPC control. Both those controls are active boosts that let you get a ton of different tones. The EXG control boosts highs and lows. The SPC gives a bump to the high mids.

In real world use, I can get a tele like bridge tone by blending in a bit of SPC and EXG to the bridge pickup, get one of the best quack tones ever from position 4 and a bit of SPC, scooped metal-style chug from the bridge unit with the EXG dimed, and an articulate, toothy solo tone with the SPC and the neck pickup.

As far as rolling down to clean up, this is the best set I've used, as you lose no sparkle or punch when rolling down like you do with passives.

As far as which active 'bucker to match with SA's, the 89 would be it, as it is basically an SA when split and an 85 in full 'bucker mode.

Re: What Active Pickups?

Benjy,
Thank you. I have had EMG 85 and 60s and they were very hot thru my Tube amp and I thought too hot to be honest, so I'm glad to hear that the Singles aren't that hot.. Thanks a million!

Re: What Active Pickups?

hmm... so a Livewire Classic will be abolutley clean with no distortion and sound insane when you add distortion?
