Re: What actually is "goosing" and where the heck did that term come from?
Without tourism or Skiing is there even an enconomy in New Hampshire?
Tourism is good for the economy, so is the legalization of Marijuana & that's far less dangerous than a lot of the people that show up every year!!! We benefit very little from it in the town I live in but places like Conway and Franconia Notch that have ski areas do pretty well for themselves? For the most part our economy is governed by the paper & lumber mills in the area. If all tourism stopped today most of the people in my town and surrounding area wouldn't feel any real affect from it, the hotel & B&B owners certainly would, but most of the people here are so used to making something from nothing life would change very little for them.
The problem isn't tourists per say, it's A-holes that happen to be tourists? First off, 90% of all tourism money comes from hikers who are walking the Appellation trail. Most of them start in GA & end up here or in ME. They are not the problem, they typically clean up after themselves & are very respectful to the environment and the local people! No cutting down trees or poaching, if they're drunk it's in the woods and they don't bother anyone, they're basically just a bunch of Neo-Hippies? It's that other 10% that give the rest a bad name...
The place I live is pretty unique, the people are very much salt of the earth, "Live Free Or Die" isn't just a clever slogan for license plates, it's very much a way of thinking & a way of life! It's embedded in almost every aspect of our daily lives! We don't like people telling us what we can & cannot do. This is why you don't have to wear a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet & why if I want to buy a hand gun all I have to do is go buy one. There's no registration or licenses, no cooling off period, just pay for it & shoot but compared to the national average we have almost no gun violence in the state?
We also have some of the last virgin forest in the eastern U.S. & the tallest mountain east of the Rocky's! It's literally my back yard! It's quite beautiful and to me & probably anyone else who's not directly benefiting from the tourism industry it kinda feels like these "10 percenters" just come up to take a giant turd on everything we hold dear!!! Unfortunately for everyone involved they often pay a very high price for their ignorance & in the worst cases somebody else pays that price for them...
