What amp do I buy?

Re: What amp do I buy?

He he, I am no authority when it comes to amps dude. I just love pointy guitars :D There are a lot of experienced and seasoned player who can help you better than I can. I can simply suggest...

No worries, just glad to have fellow pointy guitar input

Current front runners I've heard so far are the Blackstar HT Club 40 or 60 or a JMP-1 and marshall stuff set-up.
JMP-1 seems like it can do more things but the Blackstars are still pretty damn versatile and sound pretty amazing at everything they can do (from what I've heard).

Opinions?

Re: What amp do I buy?

and that Engl looks pretty cool, but is it only 5 watt? I'm pretty confused by the description.

It's Engl tube preamp with added small 2x1.5 W SS power amp.

Power amp is just there so you can use it with headphones, or even connect it to a cabinet for at max, bedroom levels.

If you want a real sound, you have to go through real poweramp.

Re: What amp do I buy?

Just a small correction, the JMP-1 and the MP-1 are NOT modeling preamps. They are programmable Tube preamps.

I would second the E530 and a power amp like a Peavey Classic 50/50 or similar.

An inexpensive cabinet, 2x12 or 4x12 should be easy to come by.

I was quite Impressed with the ENGL E530, but the cheapest I can get it new (can't find any second hand atm) is £400+shipping, which is a bit too much if I want a power amp and a cab as well.

In regards to cabs, both these seem good and surprisingly cheap, any opinions?

Harley Benton G212 Vintage - 2x12" Celsetion Vintage 30s and 120 watts mono or 2 x 60 watts stereo

~£160

Laney G212IE - 2x12" Celestion Seventy 80's and 160 watts mono or 2 x 80 watts stereo

~£175

I would go for the Harley Benton with V30s among these 2.

Re: What amp do I buy?

I'll avoid seventy 80's then.

Currently it looks like Brow's JMP-1, EL84 20/20 (or someone else's of course) and that Harley Benton Cab (unless I can get a better one cheap) vs. Blackstar HT Stage 60 combo

In the words of Street Fighter:

"FIGHT!!!"

Re: What amp do I buy?

With the Tech 21 I would only be able to get a 1x12", the 2x12" seems to be £799 (~$1250)

If I get my Bogner sorted (hopefully) new weekend, then my stereo 2x12 cab will be up for sale too :friday:

Re: What amp do I buy?

So let's amend that to:

Marshall JMP-1 pre-amp, Marshall EL84 20/20 power-amp and Marshall JCM900 1936 2x12"
vs.
Blackstar HT Stage 60 combo (2X12")

???

P.S. How does the board think a 20/20 watt stereo will do for gigs?

Laney G212IE - 2x12" Celestion Seventy 80's

It seems to be only 71 cm in width, some heads may not stand right on it?
Is there any standard about that?

Re: What amp do I buy?

Used DSL50 and used 2x12 cab. Or eqivilent Laney or fill in the blank.

For the price, that is the way to go. Used GH50L, AOR50, old JCM800 or JCM900 50W + used 2x12" 1936 cab, they should be priced pretty low in the UK. In band/live situations, you won't have any volume problems with that rig. Add many sets of earplugs to the pack, too. You'll need your ears in the following decades ;)

I've heard the JCM900 are inferior to JCM800 but have never had the chance to properly compare them, anyone know about this?

As far as the amps are concerned, the 800 is better regarded usually. As far as cabs are concerned, the 800 labeled one and the 900 labeled one will be exactly the same cab. The speakers might be different. Although I don't recall if they made the 1936 cab when they were using the G12-65 speakers...

Go with the JMP-1 and 20/20. The 20/20 will be plenty powerful enough for all but the biggest gigs.

+1
I would for this also. It is versatile and flexible. As for gigging, it is going to be enough. Biggest gig tends to mic you and put you through the PA anyways.
