What amp Does Van Halen Better these days?

Re: What amp Does Van Halen Better these days?

SD forum user, Vholic, cops the best VH tones.

While we've been talking about amps and guitars for this whole thread, how important is the actual speaker cabinet for eddie's old tones?

Also, how important is the fretboard/neck wood? Most of the pics/footage of EVH I've seen he's seems to be using a maple (or is it ash?) neck.

Who's the guy that uses the the rectifier to get the VH vibe? Sounds interesting. I bet it's something nobody would expect.

the guy from the tribute band Hot For Teacher

I dont think the rectifier gets close tone. The guy that uses the splawn is much better.

/bump

great thread! more clips/more amps please :)

That Mojave Peacemaker sounds super, my first time hearing one.

And props to the guy with the plexi that sounds like it's about to explode, it sounds terrific.

I've been fighting the urge to buy a VHT Deliverance myself as I recently developed an appreciation for the thick medium gain tones.

that mesa rec tone that that guy uses in HFT isn't even close...

al estrada uses a splawn and he's got a great VH vibe...

that's the thing though - the amp has a great 'vibe' of early VH but doesn't nail the sound - there's way too many changes in that amp from the plexi spec that are the reason for that.

I wouldn't buy a Splawn to nail EVH, I'd get a Metroamp 12000 series amp as they do a much better job - you'd be hard pressed to tell the sound difference between the Metroamp and Eddie's Magic Marshall if they were in the same room together. Having said that, I'd love to own a Splawn for it's own sound - although it doesn't nail EVH, I think those amps have a great unique sound of their own that would be cool to have. Plus the channel switching is a neat feature.

I agree

For some reason I think the guy's playing sounds more like zakk wylde with a phase 90

quite frankly, I wouldn't buy anything to nail anyone's tone..lol....

I understand where you're comming from..

I just think that alotta different amps can be made to sound like the magic marshall of old....If you have the technique, the right guitar and pickups of course too...and the quick rod w/ mullards is a good start...

that being said, I like it for its own sound..I sound like me, nobody else
