What amp has a sound like a mesa trip on crunch?

So I was playing a mesa tripple Rectifier today in that was in the rehearsal room and my god.... I never had a chance to really play one for an extended amount of time before. I didn't even get into the high gain stuff with it, I dialed in some slight crunch and used a pedal to drive it a bit more. The tone was just ear meltingly good. It cut through the mix perfectly too. It was inspiring.

My question is(sorry this is all so vague btw.) but for the type of set up I just mentioned would there be a different mesa or amp in general that could give me tone like that? Like a .50 caliber, or a lonestar, heartbreaker, DC 5, or F-50? or is the triple rec the only mesa that sounds that way simply crunched up?

Im not digging the price of a tripple rec, but some of the others might be more feasable- I mean, I would have to sell everything including my cab to get one, and then what would I play it through?

it'll be a just a little bit brighter, but a Rectoverb or Single Rec can get the job done. No need for 150W. they use almost identical preamps. set the overdrive channel to "Vintage" mode and you're ready to rock.

you can find either of those for a good bit less than a TR and they're cheaper to maintain too. A used Tremoverb would be great too but they're sometimes a little harder to find.

Re: What amp has a sound like a mesa trip on crunch?

didn't the Caliber series have a preamp based on the Rec?

oh yeah . . . the DC5 and DC10 had some Mark Series circuitry on channel 1 (clean and crunch) and Rectifier circuitry on channel 2 (lead).

a used DC5 or DC10 would be worth trying out for sure . . . they go for well under $1000

Sweet. Thanks man.

I have another question to add to this though, would a combo version of either of those work as well as a 412? or would they would as well with a 212 as a 412 do you think?

I think one of my fav guitarist uses a DC or cal actually... pepper keenan (COC, and down)

The combination of the TR + Recto cab will have more bass than other setups. not that everything will sound thin, but it won't have the same thump.

when I had my Rectoverb/Single Rec head and the smaller sized 4x12, I could still get more bass than I needed. the combos will vary so you need to try them out. some may be great from the factory, some may need a speaker swap. all Mesa combos are still loud as hell though.

Re: What amp has a sound like a mesa trip on crunch?

So a speaker swap may compensate for it?

I would love a head, but I know my cab isn't the best-might even be unworthy. It does have plenty of bass though its a closed back peavey 412M with 3 Texas Heats and 1 celestion G12T-75. I'm trying to decide if I'd be better swapping speakers, buying a better cab in the future, or if this one would just be fine-for a year or so.

It all depends on the price I could find a head for though.

You would only really need to swap the speaker if the combo came with a Black Shadow.

Recto cabs come with V30's which are different than what you have. I personally would buy a single V30 and replace that G12T-75. Or maybe 2, and X pattern the emi's and V30's.

Re: What amp has a sound like a mesa trip on crunch?

I've been thinking bought getting rid of the G-12-75 actually. Originally the cab had sheffields, I forgot which ones... i think 1209? something like that. I got a deal on a G12T-75 and thought what the hell and threw it in there, it helped out a bit with those other speakers but mic'd it sounds weaker than the Texas Heats. I was trying to get a kind of gritty sound going on with it, but V30s really might be a better choice now, the 75 really doesnt cut through well.

Interesting about the orange amps, I haven't gotten a chance to try one of those out yet. They look cool though. I think .50 cal is right, I wish I paid more attention to their gear a couple years back when I saw them, but I was just so into listening at the time and... :friday:

if you're going for crunch, put 2 Eminence Governors in there (better than a V30 in my opinion) in an X pattern with the Texas Heats.

Some of the older Peavey cabs were solidly built so I wouldn't assume that you need to get rid of it. $160 for 2 speakers (minus what you get for the Celestion) is a lot cheaper than a whole new cab.

Maybe Keith (Pink Unicorn Horsey) will chime in here...

He used to have a DC-5 I think, and made a post about how it doesn't sound the same as a Dual Rec (which is much closer to a Triple Rec than anything).

Yeah, I used to own a DC-5 and Single Rec at the same time. I couldn't justify keeping both of them, so I unloaded the DC-5. The only reason I kept the Single Rec over the DC-5 is because I needed something capable of very high gain. I loved that DC-5!

It has a looser sound to my ears than the Single Rec. I'd say it does a better job with crunch in terms of versatility, and it absolutely shines with a Tube Screamer in front. If I were looking for crunch, I'd start my search with the DC-5. (That said, I do like the "Vintage" setting on the Rec's second channel.)

caughtlikefire: I believe this peavey cab was made in 1990, and seems to be built like a tank so I most likely will just switch out two of the speakers.

I think supernosha is telepathic...or...prophetic...

Thanks pink unicorn horsie(awesome handle btw). That helps alot, cause really where I am now the DC5 sounds like it will be much better.

hmm...Anyone wanna trade for (or buy)a Laney AOR protube lead series?
