"Die With Your Boots On" from Iron Maiden's Live After Death. Cool guitar tones. Any idea what that is? Listen to the whole song, with headphones or a stereo that images well, if you're not familiar.

The liner notes list Dave Murray and Adrian Smith as each using "four 50W Marshall amps".

Either model 2204 master volume amps or model 1987 nmv amps. Both can get that type of sound cranked up.

Re: What amp(s) are responsible for this sound?

even if their musics can be good, i will never buy a cd or dvd because of the horrible pics

Re: What amp(s) are responsible for this sound?

I am not a fan of that type of music, but.......are they seriously using 4x50 Watt Amps in the studio.?
Studio sound could be anything, not the least of which is the board and compression, etc etc......10 watt amp into a 10 inch speaker, etc etc.
Again, i know nothing about these guys, maybe Giant Stacks is how they recorded.
good luck

Re: What amp(s) are responsible for this sound?

It's a live performance / recording.
Touche.....
Well that proves my point then. :)
Live recordings can also be all over the map, but if it was fairly straight, i would say whatever they had on stage, and these other members would know what that was. :)

Yup, 2204 JMP Master Model Lead s, or earlier Superleads. You DO have Marshall, right PB? If not, get a class 5 yesterday.

Well, it wasn't meant as a gotcha response. I figured you just missed it being live, so I was addressing your surprise of the use of 4 heads in the studio. :-)

No No.....no problem my friend. :)
Just an honest mistake on my part.
Should have left this one for the experts.

Re: What amp(s) are responsible for this sound?

They both used mxr distortion + pedals at this time along with parametric eq. Dave used g12-80 speakers (heavy mag version of g12-65) , Adrian used 75s at this point.

Also, both used Super Distortions in their main guitars except Adrian had the stock pickups in his Lado and his 70s SG (either a tarback or t top).

4 holers, Distortion Plus and Dimarzio is the core

Yup, you can see some pictures here: http://www.woodytone.com/2010/12/14/early-maiden-murray-smith-gear/

Maiden has some of the best artwork in music history.

Please don't comment without at LEAST having a quick listen first. You would have noticed right away (or from the title...) that it was live.

JeffB also nailed it

Re: What amp(s) are responsible for this sound?

I was at that exact concert - Long Beach Arena. Even though the amps were hidden as usual, I remember that they were using 2204's, either JMP or JCM 800, or a combination of both, and the FX rigs were built by Pete Cornish, using MXR/Boss etc.

They started using JMP-1 preamps as soon as they came out in 1992.
