What amp should I buy?

Re: What amp should I buy?

who doesn't want a really big amp that sounds loud as hell, I just want it to sound good too.

Re: What amp should I buy?

I do not want an amp that's loud as hell...I have one and it never gets used...there are not many places to get good use out of anything above about 50 watts.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Look on Ebay for a used Sovtek Mig 50. Then look for a used 2 x 12 bottem and pair of used Celestion Vintage 30's or G12H30's. Lew

drew_half_empty... is that you??? :D

The Crate Blue Voodoo is probably a really good option for you. It's a decent beginner players halfstack and it gets loud, which is the important thing for you, right?

Re: What amp should I buy?

Sure, go ahead, get the Crate. It's solid state, sounds like @ss at loud volumes. Isn't really loud at all compared to a tube amp, and people like me won't run from a Crate. C'mon dude, you can do better than that. My Marshall laughs at those Crates.

Now, get real and go try some amps.

This, my friend is the best advise you will get all day...if (for somereason) the Mig is not crunchy enough for you get a mild OD (a Boss SD-1 comes to mind) and let it rip!

what the **** is that supposed to mean :laugh2:

and what I ment by my comment is that there are few if not no parents that I know that would buy their kid a mesa for christmas, and I can see exactly why they say that too: If I were a parent I wouldn't want to spend 700$ (at least) on an amp that could damage my hearing, get the neighboors pisses as hell at me or any other things.....

So...yeah, explaining the quote would help :burnout:

Re: What amp should I buy?

Those Crate halfstacks sound like complete ass. My friend had one, and when we ended up being roommates in an apartment, he ALWAYS played on my 50w tube combo when I wasn't there. He started to hate the sound of his Crate halfstack, and was looking at Marshall tube heads when we moved our separate ways a few months back.

Keep in mind, 50 watts of TUBE power will be just as loud as 100 watts of SOLID STATE power. And never, ever forget that TUBE IS WHERE THE TONE IS! The vast, vast majority (seriously probably at least 90%) of "professional musicians" use tube amps. Almost everything you hear on record, cd, mp3, whatever, is a tube amp. GO TUBE!

Re: What amp should I buy?

Well my advice would be get a lower powered tube amp, but still use a 4x12 with good speakers. This way you won't have to crank it to earsplitting levels to get a good sound, and the 4x12 will still give you decent bass thump/punch.

Either that or find an amp with a half power switch! My friends Carvin has one, and without it on the volume is so touchy and you can't even turn it up over 1 without it tearing your flesh off!

Now why the hell didn't I think of that? I've got one for God's sake, and it sounds great. Here's a head on ebay. You can piece together a half stack it seems for cheaper than a compete half in one auction.

The most important thing about these amps--more important than tone--is the cool little amber lights that shine off that mirrored plate in the back of the head. Looks great on stage with the lights dim or off. "Darling, it's not how you sound, it's how you look---and you look Maavelous."

Re: What amp should I buy?

Why would you want to be loud so everyone can hear all the mistakes you make? Go in your room and practice. "Ya I sound like ****e but look at my huge half stack".

It's just a bad state of mind to be into. Go to your local guitar store and try out some stuff. I hope you start driving soon too or they'll let you keep the stack in the church or barn, not even an average car will fit a half stack safely. If you have to drive it around all the time it will get old really quickly.

But seriously the average rating on Harmony-central is like an 8 which is good. But if you're actually gonna get this thing I'd read all of this.

But honestly I would trust a couple guys on here over 70 people on harmony-central, these guys know what they are talking about and are pros.

Re: What amp should I buy?

If you want some decent tones...in a LOUD package that will fill up that barn-like space..with the rock & roll look...

Go to Guitar Center or Musicians Friend online..and grab one of THESE

I have a confession to make. I've got one...at least the head. I've had it for about 10 days. It's a pretty good SS state head ...in the current crop of SS heads that is. It is LOUD and will do a marshall like sound with more gain than you'll ever need or "recto" type sound with more gain than you will ever need. Clean channel...meh....useless. It's a little Buzzy, but for the $ it's a fun pure metal amp. It's not tubey or tube like (but less grainy than anything by Marshall!)...but fun to mess around with.

I suggest their speaker cab as it works better than what I have...tighter..a bit smoother..voiced for that particular amp. I ran the heads line out into the power section of my Rivera. Not bad...amp has some SERIOUS thump.

I'm taking it back simply cos it's too loud, and I don't have room for the B52 4x12. But I played it against every Crate SS, Marshall SS, and a few modelers that day and it was clearly the best SS hard rock/metal amp there (through their cab..I can't state this enough...their cab is KEY).

Re: What amp should I buy?

a small tidbit of advice...you asked a question about amps and you have recieved incredibly awesome (as you will learn is almost always the case here)advice, take the advice and save yourself money and time...you will NOT find a more knowledgeble group of people in one place on the planet when it comes to all things ROCK and all things GUITAR/AMPS!!!

wanting loud is understandable, but watts and loudness are not always hand in hand...you don't want the sound of a "MULE FARTING THROUGH A WET BLANKET" (an old quote from Robert S) to be amplified do you!!!???

there are some really great amps you can get in your price range, but it's not gonna be a fullstack...!!!!

what pedals do you have...that will be key...do you plan on getting your distortion from the amp or from the pedals?!

good amps to try (and this is key also...you gotta try em out with one of you guitars to know what it's gonna sound like)

1. Peavey classic and delta blues series (don't let the names influence you!)
2. Traynor y series
3. Tech 21
4. Crate V series

and buy used if at all possible to save huge bucks!!!

good luck with your search!

Re: What amp should I buy?

Okay, so I'm liking the B-52 Idea, as for the pedals, when ever i stop blowing my cash on food and paintball, im gonna go get me a jekyll 'n' Hyde. So, what I'm hearing is that I should probably drop lower than 100 watts and get a tube amp for better tone... maybe I can add some extra speakers for added volume, and to fill my huge barn-like space. I tried a peavey 60 watt once... IT REALLY SUCKED!!! clean was okay, bet with gain it sounded like death on a stick.

Re: What amp should I buy?

jekyll 'n' hide, isn't that a distortion/overdrive pedal? Why would you want one of those when you don't even know what amp you want?? And if you buy an amp with a good distortion in the first place, you won't need any distortion pedals.

Yeah well I think you know what I mean :)

Why would he need a pedal anyway?? I thought it didn't matter how good you sounded, as long as you were LOUD? :laugh2:
